Cook County, Illinois
Cook County is the most populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois and the second-most-populous county in the United States, after Los Angeles County, California. More than 40% of all residents of Illinois live within Cook County. As of 2020, the population was 5,275,541. Its county seat is Chicago, the most populous city in Illinois and the third-most-populous city in the United States. Cook County was incorporated in 1831 and named for Daniel Pope Cook, an early Illinois statesman. It achieved its present boundaries in 1839. Within one hundred years, the county recorded explosive population growth going from a trading post village with a little over 600 residents to four million citizens, rivalling Paris by the Great Depression. Bernard Carey
Bernard Carey was an American politician who served as Cook County State's Attorney from 1972 through 1980. Afterwards, he would serve on the Cook County Board of Commissioners and as a judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County. A Republican, he was twice elected (in 1972 and 1976) State's Attorney in strongly Democratic Cook County, Illinois. In 1980, Carey was narrowly unseated by Democrat Richard M. Daley. Early life and education Carey was the son of a school principal. Carey graduated from De La Salle Institute in 1952. He graduated from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. He graduated from DePaul University College of Law in 1958. Richard J. Elrod (February 17, 1934 – April 19, 2014) was an American jurist, sheriff, and legislator. Biography Born to a Jewish family in Chicago, Illinois, Elrod received his bachelor's and law degrees from Northwestern University. Elrod's father was Arthur X. Elrod, a Democratic Party operative who would go on to serve as a Cook County Commissioner and Chicago's 25th ward's committeeman. Elrod was Chicago's Assistant Corporation Counsel from 1958 through 1970, and its Chief City Prosecutor from 1960 through 1970. Elrod served in the Illinois House of Representatives, in 1969, as a Democrat. Stanley T. Kusper, Jr. (born January 1935) is an American politician and lawyer who served as Cook County clerk from 1973 to 1990. Early life Kusper was born in January 1935. He grew up on Chicago's West Side. Kusper's father was a politically-connected lawyer that served as general counsel to the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America. After graduating from Weber High School, he attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated magna cum laude. He then earned his J.D. degree from Northwestern University. Career With his father's connections, Kusper as hired as an attorney for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, and soon after became the board's chief counsel. Thomas Hynes
Thomas C. Hynes (November 5, 1938 – May 4, 2019) was a physics teacher who served as Cook County Assessor, President of the Illinois Senate, and 19th Ward Democratic Committeeman. Hynes was also a candidate for Mayor of Chicago in 1987. He was the father of former Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes. Biography Born in the south side of Chicago, Hynes served in the United States Army Reserve as a captain. He received his bachelor's degree from Loyola University Chicago and his J.D. degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He practiced law and taught law at John Marshall Law School.
