The 1986 Australian Football Championships was an Australian rules football series between representative teams of the three major football states. Games involving Victoria were played under State of Origin rules, whilst the match between Western Australia and South Australia involved players based in their respective states at the time. The competition was won by Western Australia. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Shane Ellis
Shane Ellis (born 27 September 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Ellis won East Fremantle's 'Fairest and Best' award in 1982 and twice played in losing Grand Finals with the WAFL club, in 1984 and 1986. The year in between, Ellis had spent with Essendon but hadn't been able to break into the seniors. A half back, he got another opportunity to play in the VFL when he was signed by West Coast. Darren Bewick
Darren Bewick (born 21 August 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who won two premierships with the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Bewick's game breaking pace & goal sense inside the attacking 50 was legendary amongst Bomber fans. After debuting in 1988, Bewick played in all three of Essendon's finals in 1989. In 1990, Bewick played in Essendon's losing Grand Final team against Collingwood. In the Preliminary Final of 1993, Bewick was instrumental in Essendon's comeback victory (trailing the Adelaide Crows by 42 points at half-time) to earn a place in the 1993 AFL Grand Final. Peter Wilson (Australian Rules Footballer)
Peter Eric McKenzie Wilson (born 15 November 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented and in the Australian Football League (AFL). He wore the number 9 guersey. Recruited to Western Australian powerhouse from Lynwood, Wilson is best known for his performance in the 1992 Grand Final, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he kicked two goals, including a famous "over-the-head" kick in the third quarter. Wilson played 117 games for the Eagles and 54 for the Richmond Tigers in the AFL. Prior to this he played in the West Australian Football League for East Fremantle Football Club, representing the club 101 times (including the 1985 Premiership). Peter Sartori
Peter David Sartori (born 24 October 1964) is a former Australian rules football player who played for the Carlton Football Club and the Fitzroy Football Club in the AFL and Swan Districts Football Club in the WAFL throughout the mid to late 1980s and early 1990s. Sartori commenced his career at Swan Districts in 1981 after being recruited from Redcliffe. He missed the 1982 finals due to a kidney injury sustained at an exhibition game in Esperance midway through the season. He continued playing in 1983 and helped his club win both the 1983 and 1984 Grand Finals playing both as a ruckman and at centre half forward. Brian Peake
Brian Francis Peake OAM (born 4 December 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), and in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also played State of Origin football for Western Australia from 1978 to 1987, captaining the side in 1979, 1980, 1986 and 1987. Peake was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1990 and was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Michael Mitchell (born 25 November 1961) is an Indigenous former Australian rules footballer for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the Richmond Football Club in the VFL/AFL. Geoff Miles
Geoff Miles (born 10 January 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood, West Coast and Geelong in the Australian Football League (AFL), formerly VFL. Miles was primarily a hard running wingman or half back but could also play up forward, especially later in his career. Recruited from Ivanhoe Amateurs in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Miles spent three seasons at Collingwood, in which he played 31 of a possible 68 senior matches, before being delisted. Andrew Geoffrey Macnish (born 11 September 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the West Coast Eagles and Geelong in the VFL/AFL.
