1985–86 Old Dominion Monarchs Basketball Team
The 1985–86 Old Dominion Monarchs basketball team represented Old Dominion University in the 1985–86 college basketball season. This was head coach Tom Young's 1st season at Old Dominion. The Monarchs competed in the Sun Belt Conference and played their home games at the ODU Fieldhouse. They finished the season 23–8, 11–3 in Sun Belt play to the regular season conference title. They lost in the semifinals of the 1986 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament, but did earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. As No. 8 seed in the East Region where they defeated No. 9 seed West Virginia in the opening round before losing to No. 1 seed and eventual National runner-up Duke in the round of 32. Tom Young (basketball)
Thomas Joseph Young (September 17, 1932 – March 20, 2022) was an American basketball coach. He coached at American University, Rutgers University, Catholic University and Old Dominion University. Early life and education Born in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, Young attended the University of Maryland, where he played on the basketball team, graduating in 1958. Young interrupted his college career for a 19-month tour of duty in Germany for the United States Army after the 1952–53 season. In 2003, the University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame inducted him into its ranks. Coaching career After graduating from Maryland in 1958, Young became head coach at the Catholic University of America. The 1985–86 UAB Blazers men's basketball team represented the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a member of the Sun Belt Conference during the 1985–86 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Old Dominion–VCU men's basketball rivalry is a men's college basketball rivalry between the VCU Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Old Dominion Monarchs of Old Dominion University. Richmond Coliseum
Richmond Coliseum is a defunct arena located in downtown Richmond, Virginia, with a capacity of 13,500 that was most often used for various large concerts. The arena opened in 1971 and the region is looking to replace the aging facility with a larger one.
