1985–86 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
The 20th World Cup season began in August 1985 in Argentina (for men only), resumed in December 1985 in Italy, and concluded in March 1986 in Canada. Because of the South America events (held during winter in the Southern Hemisphere), this was the first time that the World Cup season had started prior to December 1. The overall champions were Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg, his second consecutive overall win, and Maria Walliser of Switzerland, her first. This was the first season in which a separate discipline championship was awarded for Super G, which had been introduced as a part of giant slalom in the 1983 season. The addition increased the number of discipline champions to five, which led to the elimination of the Combined discipline championship the next season. Marc Girardelli
Marc Girardelli (born 18 July 1963) is an Austrian and Luxembourgish former alpine ski racer, a five-time World Cup overall champion who excelled in all five alpine disciplines. Biography Born in Lustenau, Austria, Girardelli started skiing at the age of five and was racing at seven. He enjoyed significant success at junior level, winning local competitions in not only alpine skiing but also ski jumping. He competed for Austria until 1976, then switched to Luxembourg due to disagreements about coaching – the Austrian skiing federation wanted Girardelli to attend a ski boarding school in Schruns, from Lustenau, while his parents preferred for him to stay in his hometown. Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline. It involves skiing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. Michael Mair
Michael "Much" Mair (born 13 February 1962) is an Italian alpine skiing coach and former Alpine skier. Born in Bruneck, Italy, he won a total of three World Cup races. He closed 10th in overall in 1988 Alpine Skiing World Cup. He also competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics and the 1988 Winter Olympics. Val-d'Isère
Val-d'Isère (, literally ''Valley of Isère'') is a commune of the Tarentaise Valley, in the Savoie department (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region) in southeastern France. It lies from the border with Italy. It is on the border of the Vanoise National Park created in 1963. During the Albertville 1992 Winter Olympics, the ''Face de Bellevarde'' was the site of the men's downhill race. Bojan Križaj
Bojan Križaj () (born 3 January 1957) is a Slovenian, back then Yugoslavian, former alpine skier. During his international career he competed for the then-existing Yugoslavia. He competed at three Winter Olympics. Career Križaj, born in Kranj, was a member of a well known Tržič ski family so he started skiing at the age of 3. In the season 1976/77 he received the first World Cup point, qualified among the 15 best slalom runners and later during that season in Madonna di Campiglio he hit his first top 3 podium. Peter Müller (born 6 October 1957) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. Career A world champion in 1987 in the downhill, Müller was a silver medalist the downhill in two world championships (1985 and 1989) and two Olympic games (1984 and 1988). Müller won the World Cup season title in the downhill in 1979, 1980, and 1982 (tied with Steve Podborski of Canada). Müller finished second in the World Cup downhill standings in 1985, 1986, and 1987. His best finish in the overall standings was fourth, which he achieved three times. Douglas Grey Lewis (born January 18, 1964) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer with the U.S. Ski Team in the mid-1980s. Born in Middlebury, Vermont, he was a two-time Olympian in 1984 and 1988. After competing in the 1984 Olympics at age 20, Lewis made his World Cup debut a month later in March 1984 with an 8th-place finish at Whistler, BC. Las Leñas is a ski resort in Argentina, located in the western part of Mendoza Province. It has reliable powder snow and climate for extreme and off-piste skiing. Construction of the ski center began January 1983, and by July 1983, it opened with a 300 bed hotel.
