1985–1986 Massachusetts Legislature
The 174th Massachusetts General Court, consisting of the Massachusetts Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, met in 1985 and 1986 during the governorship of Michael Dukakis. William Bulger served as president of the Senate and George Keverian served as speaker of the House. Notable legislation included the Safe Roads Act. Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court (formally styled the General Court of Massachusetts) is the state legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The name "General Court" is a hold-over from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the ''Great and General Court'', but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the state constitution. It is a bicameral body. The upper house is the Massachusetts Senate which is composed of 40 members. The lower body, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has 160 members. (Until 1978, it had 240 members.) It meets in the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill in Boston. Robert Correia
Robert Correia (January 3, 1939 – July 2, 2021) was an American politician who represented the 12th and 7th Bristol Districts in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1977 to 2008 and served as the 41st Mayor of Fall River, Massachusetts from 2008 to 2010. He ran for re-election as Mayor in 2009 but finished third in the mayoral primary behind City Councilor Cathy Ann Viveiros and Attorney William Flanagan. Jack Backman
Jack H. Backman (April 26, 1922 – July 19, 2002) was an American politician who served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts Senate. Early life Backman was born on April 26, 1922 in Saugus, Massachusetts. His father was a shoe factory foreman and Backman grew up in various New England manufacturing towns, including Lynn, Massachusetts, Bangor, Maine, and Claremont, New Hampshire. In 1943 he graduated from Syracuse University. During World War II he was a sergeant in the Army Air Force. In 1948 he graduated from Harvard Law School. From 1961 to 1966 he was a member of the Brookline, Massachusetts Housing Authority. Massachusetts General Court Backman was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1965 to 1971 and the Massachusetts Senate from 1971 to 1987. George Bachrach
George A. Bachrach (born December 2, 1951) is the former president of the Environmental League of Massachusetts, having former careers as an American politician, attorney, and journalism professor at Boston University. Biography A 1973 graduate of Trinity College and a 1976 graduate of Boston University School of Law, Bachrach worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County and as a campaign manager and administrative assistant for Congressman Ed Markey before his election to the State Senate in 1980. After leaving the state senate, Bachrach practiced law for nearly a decade as a partner with the Boston law firm Brown, Rudnick, Freed, and Gesmer.
