1985 Virginia Slims World Championship Series
The 1985 Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the 15th season since the foundation of the Women's Tennis Association. It commenced in March 1985, and concluded in March 1986 after 52 events. The Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the elite tour for professional women's tennis organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). It was held in place of the WTA Tour from 1983 until 1987 and featured tournaments that had previously been part of the ''Toyota Series'' and the ''Avon Series''. It included the four Grand Slam tournaments and a series of other events. ITF tournaments were not part of the tour, although they awarded points for the WTA World Ranking. The season was dominated by Martina Navratilova, who won 13 tournaments and reached the finals of the four Grand Slam events. She defeated Chris Evert at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. The Virginia Slims Championships was held twice in 1986 because of a change of schedule from March to November. It was the fifteenth season-ending WTA Tour Championships, the annual tennis tournament for the best female tennis players in singles on the 1985 WTA Tour, which ran from March 1985 to March 1986. It was held from March 17 through March 23, 1986 in New York City, New York in the United States. First-seeded Martina Navratilova won the singles title. Petra Delhees
Petra Jauch-Delhees (born 28 March 1959), born Petra Delhees, is a former professional tennis player from Switzerland. Biography Delhees, a left-hander, began playing Federation Cup tennis for Switzerland as a 17-year old in 1976. She was a member of the 1981 and 1983 Swiss semifinal teams, the latter her final season. She finished with a 33-15 overall record, at the time the Swiss record for the number of wins. Her doubles partnership with Christiane Jolissaint, which resulted in ten wins, is the most prolific in the Fed Cup for Switzerland. From 1983 she was known as Petra Jauch-Delhees after marrying German Peter Jauch. She was a doubles finalist with Patricia Medrado at the 1983 Swiss Open. Erica Kathleen "Kathy" Horvath (born August 25, 1965) is an American former professional tennis player. She is best known for upsetting world No. 1 Martina Navratilova in the fourth round of the 1983 French Open, delivering her only defeat for the season. Career She was the youngest player to play in the US Open in 1979 at 14 years and five days — this record still stands. Horvath was the youngest player to win the U.S. National 16 and under in 1979. She also is the only player to ever win all four age groups in the U.S. Girls Clay Courts in all consecutive years. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch
Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (''née'' Kohde; born 11 December 1963) is a former German tennis player and member of the Die Linke. During her tennis career, she won two women's doubles Grand Slam titles. She also won eight singles titles and a total of 25 doubles titles. Personal life Kohde-Kilsch was born Claudia Kohde in Saarbrücken, but added the hyphenated "-Kilsch" to her name which came from her adoptive father Jürgen Kilsch, an attorney. She has a younger sister, Katrin. She began playing tennis aged 5, and was soon a rising junior player. Kohde-Kilsch campaigned for Oskar Lafontaine of Die Linke at the 2012 Saarland state election. Elizabeth Smylie (née Sayers, born 11 April 1963), sometimes known as Liz Smylie, is a retired Australian tennis player. During her career, she won four Grand Slam titles, one of them in women's doubles and three in mixed doubles. She also won three singles titles and 36 doubles titles on the tour. Kathryn "Kathy" Jordan (born December 3, 1959) is a former American tennis player. During her career, she won seven Grand Slam titles, five of them in women's doubles and two in mixed doubles.
