The 1985 Newfoundland general election was held on 2 April 1985 to elect members of the 40th General Assembly of Newfoundland. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Thus, the government chose to sit near the heat, and leave the opposition sitting in the cold. Brian Peckford
Alfred Brian Peckford (born August 27, 1942) is a Canadian politician who served as the third premier of Newfoundland from March 26, 1979 to March 22, 1989. A member of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party, Peckford was first elected as the Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) for Green Bay following the 1972 general election. He served as a cabinet minister in Frank Moores' government before he was elected as PC leader in 1979 following Moores' retirement. Background Alfred Brian Peckford was born in Whitbourne, Newfoundland on August 27, 1942, and was raised in the communities of Whitbourne, Marystown, and Lewisporte. Leo Denis Barry (born August 7, 1943) is a Canadian jurist and current Justice of the Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was born in Red Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Barry graduated from Memorial University (BA 1963, BSc 1962), Dalhousie Law School in 1967 and received a Masters (specialization in Jurisprudence and International Law) from Yale Law School in 1968. Prior to his judicial career, Barry was a Newfoundland MHA and Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leader and Leader of the Opposition from 1984 until 1987 when he was forced to resign as party leader due to opposition by his caucus. Mount Scio
Mount Scio is a provincial electoral district in Newfoundland and Labrador. As of 2011 there are 14,482 people living in the district. Mount Scio includes part of the town of Paradise and the part of the city of St. John's. The district was created following the 2015 electoral districts boundaries review. The majority of Mount Scio was previously the district of St. John's North. The district also includes parts of the former districts of Mount Pearl North, St. John's East and Topsail. Peter Fenwick (politician)
Peter Fenwick (born July 18, 1944) is a Canadian politician. He is a former leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party. Fenwick was born in St. Thomas, Ontario to Digby and Benoit Fenwick of Montreal and Stanbridge East. He and his wife Jennifer moved to Cape St George, Newfoundland in 1968 and had six children. His oldest son attended school at Notre Dame du Cap in the first early immersion French program in 1975 of which five of the six graduated. He was a community college teacher when he was acclaimed provincial NDP leader at the party's convention on November 8, 1981. Fenwick was first elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in a 1984 by-election in Menihek, Labrador. Labrador West is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From 1975 to 1996, the district was known as Menihek. Known as the iron ore capital of Canada with two modern mining communities, Labrador City and Wabush, the district has a strong base of labour support. The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a provincial political party in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The party was founded in 1949 and most recently formed the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador from the 2003 general election until the 2015 general election.
