IAAF World Cup In Athletics
The IAAF Continental Cup was an international track and field competition organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The event was proposed by IAAF former President Primo Nebiolo and was first held in 1977 as the IAAF World Cup. The event was initially held every two years, but following the establishment of the World Athletics Championships it moved to a quadrennial basis. The 1989 edition was held the same year as the World Indoor Championships, then moved to the even-year between Summer Olympics, ensuring the sport of athletics had a global competition in all years. The original format included separate men's and women's competitions consisting of 21 events each, with team points being awarded for the finishing position of each athlete. Eight teams, five continental and three national, entered an athlete in each event: if the stadium had a ninth lane, the host nation would also be permitted to enter. Omer Khalifa
Omer Khalifa (born 18 December 1956) is a Sudanese retired middle distance runner who set a national record of 3:33.28 minutes over 1500 meters in Grosseto of 1986. Prior to this, he won silver medals in the 800 m and 1500 m races at the Olympic Boycott Games in 1980. Khalifa won the 1500 m race at the World Cup 1985 in Canberra. He finished fifth in the 1500 m final at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics in Rome and eighth in the 1984 Summer Olympics in the same event. He also competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics, finishing 12th. Running career Khalifa ran at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, both in the 800 meters and over 1500 meters, but different from each in the flow. Harald Schmid
Harald Schmid (; born 29 September 1957) is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the sprints and hurdles. He was one of the best 400 metres hurdles runners in the world during his career. Career Schmid won bronze with the West German 4 × 400 m relay team at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal as well as an individual bronze in the 400 m hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984. In addition, he won silver at the 1983 World Championships in the 400 m hurdles and the 4 × 400 m relay and a further bronze in 400 m hurdles at the 1987 World Championships. At the latter, he finished only 0.02 s behind the gold medalist Edwin Moses; Schmid's duels with Moses during the late 1970s and early 1980s were famous and Schmid was the last person to beat Moses before his streak of 122 consecutive victories. Aleksandr Vasilyev (hurdler)
Aleksandr Vasilyev (russian: Александр Васильев; born 26 July 1961) is a Belarusian former track and field hurdler who competed in the 400 metres hurdles for the Soviet Union. He set his lifetime best of 47.92 seconds for the event in Moscow in 1985. This remains the Belarusian national record. Vasilyev established himself with a gold medal at the Friendship Games in 1984. A slew of silver medals followed at the 1985 European Cup, 1985 IAAF World Cup, 1986 European Athletics Championships, and the 1986 Goodwill Games. Andre Phillips
André Lamar Phillips (born September 5, 1959) is a retired American track and field athlete who is best known for winning the 400 metres hurdles gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games. Phillips spent most of his career in the shadow of his idol, Edwin Moses, frequently as runner up during Moses' unequaled winning streak. He managed to beat him once, at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. In 1983, Phillips finished fifth in the 400 m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Championships. In 1985, in absence of Moses, Phillips won his only US National Championship title, and also won the IAAF World Cup. In 1988, Phillips lost to Moses at the Olympic trials, but showed a good pace at Olympics, winning his heat and semifinal. In the final, Phillips ran his personal best 47.19 to win a gold medal, beating second-place Amadou Dia Ba from Senegal by 0.04 seconds. Jörg Naumann
Jörg Naumann (born 2 January 1963) is a German former track and field hurdler who competed for East Germany. He was a bronze medallist at the 1985 IAAF World Cup, helping the East German men to third in the team competition. Sergey Usov (russian: Сергей Усов; born 16 January 1964 in Tashkent) is a retired Belarusian athlete who specialised in the sprint hurdles. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics, reaching the semifinals, as well as two outdoor and two indoor World Championships. Tonie Campbell
Anthony Eugene Campbell (born June 14, 1960) is an American former hurdler. He is the 1988 Olympic bronze medallist in the 110m Hurdles, the 1987 World Indoor champion in the 60m hurdles, and won the 1985 World Cup title in the 110m hurdles. A three-time winner of the 110 metres hurdles at the IAAF Grand Prix Final, he also won the 1987 Overall Grand Prix title, with fellow hurdler Greg Foster second and pole vaulter Sergey Bubka third. Werner Schildhauer
Werner Schildhauer (born 5 June 1959, in Dessau) is a retired German track and field athlete, who represented the former East Germany at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow in the 10,000 meter run and placed 7th behind his teammate Jörg Peter. Career At the European Championship in 1982 he won the silver medal in the 5,000 meter run and in the 10,000 meter run. At the World Athletics Championship in 1983 he won the silver medal in both the 5000 meter and 10,000 meter runs. Pat Porter
Patrick ("Pat") Ralph Porter (May 31, 1959 – July 26, 2012) was an American distance runner. Born in Wadena, Minnesota, he graduated from Adams State in 1982 with a degree in marketing, after which he became one of the most dominant U.S. distance runners of the 1980s. Porter was a two time U.S. Olympian, running the 10000 meters at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. In 1983 he set the World Record for a road 10K at 27:31.8. He won the silver medal at the 1985 IAAF World Cup in Canberra, Australia, getting nipped at the tape by Ethiopia's Wodajo Bulti by six hundredths of a second. Wodajo Bulti (born 11 March 1957) is a retired Ethiopian long-distance runner who specialized in the 5000 metres, 10000 metres and cross-country running. Career Wodajo was one of the most significant Ethiopian middle and long-distance runners in 1980s. In his early years on the track he concentrated more on shorter distances such as 1500 metres because of great depth of Ethiopian talent over longer distances. Stefano Mei (born 3 February 1963 in La Spezia) is an Italian long-distance runner who specialized in the 5000 and 10000 metres. European champion on 10000 m in 1986. From 31 January 2021 he is the new president of Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL). Biography Stefano Mei won eight medals, at senior level, at the International athletics competitions.
