1985 England Rugby Union Tour Of New Zealand
The 1985 England rugby union tour of New Zealand was a series of seven matches played by the England national rugby union team in New Zealand in May and June 1985. England played seven games, including two test matches against the New Zealand national rugby union team. They won four of the seven matches but lost both of the test matches as well as the fixture against the Auckland provincial team. The preliminaries to this tour were shrouded in uncertainty and selection announcements containing players whose availability had not been confirmed. Dick Greenwood, England's current coach, announced he was not available having just taken a new job, and eventually 2 coaches were appointed under Derek Morgan, Martin Green and Brian Ashton. England National Rugby Union Team
The England national rugby union team represents England in men's international rugby union. They compete in the annual Six Nations Championship with France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. England have won the championship on 29 occasions (as well as sharing 10 victories) – winning the Grand Slam 13 times and the Triple Crown 26 times – making them the most successful outright winners in the tournament's history. They are currently the only team from the Northern Hemisphere to win the Rugby World Cup, having won the tournament in 2003, and have been runners-up on three other occasions. Southland Rugby
Rugby Southland (formerly the Southland Rugby Football Union) is the provincial rugby union who govern the Southland region of New Zealand. Their headquarters are at Rugby Park Stadium in Invercargill, which is also the home ground of the union's professional team, the Southland Stags who compete in the Mitre 10 Cup Championship Division and challenge for the Ranfurly Shield. Despite their proud history, no Southland team has ever won the top division of the New Zealand National Provincial Championship since organised competition began in 1976. Richard Hill (rugby Union, Born 1961)
Richard Hill (born 4 May 1961 in Birmingham) is a rugby union coach and former English international rugby footballer. Biography Born in Birmingham, Hill was educated at Bishop Wordsworth's Grammar School in Salisbury, and Exeter University. Incidentally his namesake, Richard Hill MBE, who was in the England team to win the Rugby World Cup in 2003 also attended Bishop Wordsworth's School and both played for Salisbury Rugby Football Club. Early successes at Schools Level One of Richard's early successes in 1980 was winning the Wiltshire Schools U18 Sevens tournament with Salisbury's Boys Grammar school Bishop Wordsworth's defeating Swindon's St. Joseph's Comprehensive Roman Catholic School in a hard fought final at the Headlands School in Wiltshire. Huw Davies (rugby Union)
Geoffrey Huw Davies (born 18 February 1959, in Eastbourne) is an English rugby union player, who played as fly-half. He attended King Edwards VI College, Stourbridge, in the West Midlands. He played for Coventry FC (RU), Wasps RFC and for England. Career Davies had first test cap on 21 February 1981, during a match against Scotland, his last cap was against France, on 15 March 1986. Stuart Barnes
Stuart Barnes (born 22 November 1962 in Grays, Essex) is a former English rugby union footballer, and now rugby commentator for Sky Sports. Barnes played fly-half for Newport RFC, Bristol, Bath; and represented England at international level. Biography Although born in Essex, he played his schoolboy international rugby for Wales Schools. Such was his speed and talent, he made the leap from the U15s to the U19s after one season, and became an ever-present (he didn't miss a schools international for four years between 1976 & 1980), also captaining the team on several occasions. Jamie Salmon
James Lionel Broome Salmon (born 16 October 1959) is an English rugby union centre who uniquely appeared in international matches for both New Zealand and England. Career He became a Wellington player in 1980 and first appeared for New Zealand at under-23 level before being selected for a match against Fiji which did not carry full capped status. He was selected for New Zealand's tour to Europe in the autumn of 1981 and won all his three All Black caps on that tour. He made his full New Zealand debut against Romania in Bucharest and played in both tests against France. Mike Harrison (rugby Union)
Michael Edward Harrison (born 9 April 1956) in Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire) is a former first-class rugby union footballer, playing on the wing for Wakefield and England. He was educated at QEGS Wakefield and played for Yorkshire schools at under 16 and 19 levels and North East Schools against Australian schools. He also won a schools athletics vest for Yorkshire as a sprinter and triple jumper and competed in the national schools championships. He was involved in a serious car accident in 1975 and eye injuries prevented him playing rugby for more than two years. In 1978 he joined Wakefield RFC as a scrum half in the third team before moving to centre and finally right wing for the first team where he played in over 300 games. Wakefield RFC was an English rugby union club, founded in 1901 and folded in 2004 as a result of poor finances, with a trading loss of £105,000 for the season and unsecured creditors' loans of approximately £640,000. Bryan Barley
Bryan Barley was a former England international rugby union centre. He was educated at Normanton Grammar School and Leeds University where he studied economics and mathematics. He joined Wakefield RFCin 1978 converting thirteen of Wakefield's seventeen tries (a club record) on his debut. He continued to play for the club until 1993, playing in over 300 games and he was the first Wakefield player to be selected for England direct from the club since Jack Ellis in 1939. On leaving Wakefield he joined Sandal RFC. David Ingall in the club history book describes how "he brought both power and subtlety to the outside centre position, with an eye for the smallest gap in the defence or the pace and strength to carry him round his opponent. Chris Martin (rugby Union)
Ronald Christopher Martin (born 27 June 1961) is an English former rugby union international who represented England in four Test matches during the 1980s. A native of Truro, Martin played his rugby for Bath and made his international appearances in the 1985 Five Nations Championship, where he was England's starting fullback in all four matches. He proved at times susceptible under the high ball and made a particularly costly mistake against Wales which led to a match turning try. Paul William Dodge (born 26 February 1958 in Leicester, England) is a former English rugby union international footballer who gained 32 caps for his country between 1978 and 1985. His Leicester Tigers career earned him 436 appearances.
