The 1985 Brecon and Radnor by-election was a parliamentary by-election held on 4 July 1985 for the British House of Commons constituency of Brecon and Radnor. Previous MP The seat had become vacant on 8 May 1985, when the constituency's Conservative Member of Parliament (MP), Tom Ellis Hooson, had died at the age of 52. He was a cousin of Emlyn Hooson, the former Liberal Party MP for Montgomery. Tom Hooson had been Brecon and Radnor's MP since the 1979 general election, when he gained the seat from the Labour Party. The 1983 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 9 June 1983. It gave the Conservative Party under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher the most decisive election victory since that of the Labour Party in 1945, with a majority of 144 seats. Thatcher's first term as Prime Minister had not been an easy time. Unemployment increased during the first three years of her premiership and the economy went through a recession. Richard Livsey
Richard Arthur Lloyd Livsey, Baron Livsey of Talgarth (2 May 1935 – 16 September 2010) was a British Liberal Democrat politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brecon and Radnorshire from 1985 to 1992, and again from 1997 to 2001. Family and education He was the son of Arthur Norman Livsey and Lilian Maisie (née James). His father was a seacaptain who died in Iraq when Richard was just three years old. The 1992 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 9 April 1992, to elect 651 members to the House of Commons. Jonathan Peter Evans FRSA (born 2 June 1950) is a Welsh lawyer, businessman and former politician. He has been Chairman of the British Insurance Brokers Association since 1 January 2020. The 1987 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 11 June 1987, to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. Roger Joseph Everest, (born 1939) is a Welsh barrister and independent parliamentary candidate. He was educated at Llandaff Cathedral School, Kingswood School, Bath, and the University of Wales. One-nation conservatism, also known as one-nationism or Tory democracy, is a paternalistic form of British political conservatism. Screaming Lord Sutch (10 November 1940 – 16 June 1999), who had his name legally changed from David Edward Sutch, was an English musician and perennial parliamentary candidate. He was the founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and served as its leader from 1983 to 1999, during which time he stood in numerous parliamentary elections. He holds the record for contesting the most Parliamentary elections, standing in 39 elections from 1963 to 1997.
