1984 Badminton World Cup
The 1984 Badminton World Cup was the sixth edition of an international tournament Badminton World Cup. The event was held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 18 September to 23 September 1984. China won titles in 3 disciplines : Both the singles events and Women's doubles. Indonesia won Men's doubles while cross country pair from Sweden and England won the mixed doubles title. Istora Senayan
Gelora Bung Karno Sports Palace ( id, Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno, abbreviated as ''Istora''), the formerly name ''Istora Senayan'' is an indoor sporting arena located in Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, Jakarta, Indonesia. The capacity of the arena after 2018 reopening is 7,166. This arena is usually used for badminton tournaments. Its maiden event was the 1961 Thomas Cup. It was also used during the 1962 Asian Games and was renovated to host the 2018 edition. Its first post-renovation event was the 2018 Indonesia Masters. During the latter Games, it hosted the badminton and later stages of basketball events. The arena originally was planned to stage the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup and becoming the only Indonesian venue in the three-country joint bid but was moved to a newly-built arena inside the complex. Razif Sidek
Datuk Razif Sidek (born 29 May 1962) is a former badminton player from Malaysia and coach. Personal life He is the second eldest of the famous five Sidek brothers. Razif and his siblings gained exposure about badminton sport from their father, Sidek Abdullah Kamar, Haji Mohd Sidek. Under the guidance of his father, Razif and the rest of his siblings were destined to be Malaysia's champions. In addition, Razif Sidek is one of the alumni of Victoria Institution (batch 1974–1980). He is married to a former model, Khalidah Khalid and the couple is blessed with five children. In addition, his youngest son, Mohd Fazriq is also active in badminton just like his father. Imelda Wiguna
Imelda Wiguna (also known as ''Imelda Wigoena'', , born 12 October 1951) is a former badminton player from Indonesia who played at the world class level from the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s. Career A doubles specialist, Wiguna's two most impressive years in badminton were 1979 and 1980. In 1979 she won both doubles events, women's doubles with Verawaty Wiharjo and mixed doubles with Christian Hadinata, at the prestigious All-England Championships. The following year she reached the final of both events at the then triennial IBF World Championships in Jakarta, losing the women's doubles with Verawaty but winning the mixed doubles with Christian. Martin Dew
Martin Dew is a former English male badminton player who specialized in doubles. Career Dew won two medals in the World Championships, a silver medal in 1983 for men's doubles and a bronze medal in 1987 for mixed doubles. Thomas Kihlström
Thomas Kihlström (born 11 December 1948) is a former badminton player from Sweden known for his agility, tactical astuteness, and coolness under pressure. Though an impressive singles player early in his career, his greatest successes came in doubles. Career Kihlström won the 1983 IBF World Championships in mixed doubles with Nora Perry. He also won 16 medals at the European Championships, two of them in men's singles, two in mixed doubles, five in men's doubles and 7 in team competition. Gillian Clark (badminton)
Gillian Margaret Clark (born 2 September 1961) is an English badminton commentator and former badminton player who specialized in doubles. Badminton career World Championships Clark won two bronze medals at the World Championships a decade apart; for women's doubles in 1983, and for mixed doubles in 1993. Xu Rong (badminton)
Xu Rong (born around 1958), is a former badminton player from China, who ranks among the best of her time. Career Xu Rong was one of the main Chinese players who dominated the women's game after China joined the International Badminton Federation in 1981 in both singles and doubles. Wu Jianqiu (, born 1962) is a retired female badminton player from China. Career Wu was one of China's leading combination women's singles and doubles players in the first several years after her country joined the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation). She won the Danish Open women's singles in 1982 (the first of the two Danish Opens that were played that year). In 1983 she won the prestigious All-England Open women's doubles title with Xu Rong and was runner-up in the singles to fellow countrywoman Zhang Ailing. Wu Dixi (, born 1962 in Nanhai, Guangdong) is a retired Chinese female badminton player. Career Wu was part of a cadre of Chinese players who dominated women's international badminton after China became a member of the International Badminton Federation in 1981. She won the 1982 and 1984 All-England Championships and the 1983 IBF World Championships in women's doubles with Lin Ying.
