1984 Air Canada Cup
The 1984 Air Canada Cup was Canada's sixth annual national midget 'AAA' hockey championship, which was played April 17 – 21, 1984 at the North Bay Memorial Gardens in North Bay, Ontario. Prior to the season, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association overhauled the format of the Air Canada Cup. Under the new format, the twelve branch champions would compete in five regional playoffs to qualify for the national championship. They would be joined by the host team to round out the six-team field. The host North Bay Pinehill ended up winning the first gold medal under the Air Canada Cup's new format. The Notre Dame Hounds and Lions du Lac St-Louis took silver and bronze, respectively. North Bay Memorial Gardens
The North Bay Memorial Gardens is an arena located in North Bay, Ontario. It was built in 1955 and has a capacity of 4,246. The Gardens hosted the North Bay Centennials ice hockey team from 1982 to 2002, before they moved to Saginaw, Michigan. The arena's primary tenants today are the North Bay Battalion of the OHL and the Nipissing Lakers men's ice hockey team of the OUA. In 2007 Memorial Gardens played host to the Atlanta Thrashers and New York Islanders for a pre-season game after the city of North Bay was crowned as Hockeyville. The City and the Committee that brought Hockeyville to North Bay used the prize money to put up a new electronic rink sign. The arena underwent a $12 million renovation for the new OHL franchise, the North Bay Battalion's arrival for the 2013–2014 season, also signing a 15-year lease with the arena. Myles O'Connor
Myles O'Connor (born April 2, 1967) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. O'Connor played in the National Hockey League for the New Jersey Devils and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and played 43 regular season games between 1990 and 1994, scoring 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points, collecting 69 penalty minutes. Playing career Born in Calgary, Alberta, O'Connor was drafted 45th overall by the Devils in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. He played four years for the University of Michigan hockey program before turning pro at the end of the 1988-89 college season. O'Connor spent five years with the Devils organization, splitting time between the AHL and NHL. Sherwood Park is a large hamlet in Alberta, Canada within Strathcona County that is recognized as an urban service area. Dollard-des-Ormeaux
Dollard-des-Ormeaux (; commonly referred to as D.D.O. or simply Dollard) is a predominantly English-speaking suburb of Montreal in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is located on the Island of Montreal. The town was named after French martyr Adam Dollard des Ormeaux. The town was merged with the city of Montreal in 2002, and became part of the borough of Dollard-Des Ormeaux–Roxboro. Wilcox, Saskatchewan
Wilcox ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Bratt's Lake No. 129 and Census Division No. 6. It is approximately 41 kilometres (25 mi) south of the City of Regina. Wilcox is the home of the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, a boarding school for students in grades 9-12. Brad Werenka
John Bradley Werenka (born February 12, 1969) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, 47th overall. Werenka played college hockey for the Northern Michigan University Wildcats, with whom he won the 1991 NCAA hockey title. In addition to minor pro experience, Werenka went on to play for the Oilers, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Calgary Flames. His career was ended December 29, 2000 due to a concussion suffered in a game. Darren Turcotte
Darren Turcotte (born March 2, 1968) is an American former professional Ice hockey player. Early life Turcotte's family moved to North Bay, Ontario where he spent most of his childhood. After his family returned to northern Ontario, he began playing ice hockey at the age of five. He then played six seasons with the Pinehill Coffee Shop 'AAA' minor hockey team, which at the time was coached by his father Don Turcotte. In 1984, now playing in the midget division, Darren scored 60 goals and in that same year he led the Pinehill Coffee Shop win the NOHA, Ontario, and Canadian Midget hockey titles. After his impressive 60 goal season, Darren was drafted to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) North Bay Centennials in the third round. He played four seasons with the Centennials, averaging 60 points a season with 30 goals and 30 assists. Cam Russell
Cameron D. Russell (born January 12, 1969) is a Canadian former National Hockey League defenceman. Biography As a youth, Russell played in the 1982 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Chosen in the third round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft (50th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks, Russell played ten seasons, almost all of which came within the Chicago Blackhawks organization. He finished his career in 1998–99 with the Colorado Avalanche. The following season, Russell became an assistant coach with the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, serving from 1999–2002. He returned to the Mooseheads in 2008 as the team's head coach and general manager, moving solely to the general manager role early in the 2010-11 season. Luke Richardson
Luke Glen Richardson (born March 26, 1969) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach who is the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. Prior to his coaching career, Richardson played as a defenceman in the NHL for 21 seasons. Playing career Richardson was selected seventh overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft after two successful seasons with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Midway through his rookie NHL season, on January 6, 1988, Richardson was the victim of an infamous attack from Dino Ciccarelli of the Minnesota North Stars, who clubbed him over the head several times with his stick. Ciccarelli was later convicted of assault, serving one day in jail and paying a fine of C$1,000. However, the assault had no discernible effects on the play of Richardson.
