1983–84 Calgary Flames Season
The 1983–84 Calgary Flames season was the fourth season in Calgary and 12th for the Flames franchise in the National Hockey League. The Flames finished in second place in the Smythe Division, earning a first round playoff match-up against the Vancouver Canucks. Calgary defeated Vancouver in four games to face the top team in the NHL, the Edmonton Oilers. The Flames took the series to the maximum seven games, ultimately falling to the Oilers in the seventh game by a 7–4 score. The Flames moved into their new arena, the Olympic Saddledome after spending their first three seasons playing out of the Stampede Corral. Built at a cost of $100 million CAD, the Saddledome was also set to serve as a venue for the 1988 Winter Olympics. The arena's distinctive roof lent itself to the arena's name. Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference (french: Conférence de l'Ouest) is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks are a professional ice hockey team based in Vancouver. Minnesota North Stars
The Minnesota North Stars were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 26 seasons, from 1967 to 1993. The North Stars played their home games at the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota, and the team's colors for most of its history were green, yellow, gold and white. Jamie Macoun
Jamie Neil Macoun (born August 17, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played over 1,000 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) during a 17-year career. An undrafted player, Macoun played three seasons of college hockey with the men before signing with the Calgary Flames in 1983. Macoun was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team on defence in 1984 and, after missing 17 months due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident, was a member of Calgary's 1989 Stanley Cup championship team. He was involved in one of the largest trades in NHL history, a ten-player deal that sent him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1992. 36th National Hockey League All-Star Game
The 36th National Hockey League All-Star Game was held in Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, home to the New Jersey Devils, on January 31, 1984. Uniforms The All-Star uniforms introduced in 1983 received an update for this game. The typeface for the diagonal "Wales" and "Campbell" conference names on the front of the jerseys changed from a plain block font to the style used by the New York Rangers. Trim stripes were added to the shoulder/sleeve panels and waistline - black on the white Wales jersey, and white on the orange Campbell jersey. This design would continue to be used through 1986. The Calgary Stampeders are a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta. The Stampeders compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Harvey The Hound
Harvey the Hound is the mascot of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames. Introduced in 1984, Harvey was the first mascot in the NHL. History Created and performed by Grant Kelba, Harvey made his debut in 1983 serving as the mascot of the Flames and later as a second mascot for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. His popularity with the Flames was such that many teams contacted Kelba about making mascots for their own teams. His first game, February 16, 1984 was a Flames rout over the Pittsburgh Penguins, 10 – 3 at the Olympic Saddledome.
