Shot Put
The shot put is a track and field event involving "putting" (throwing) a heavy spherical ball—the ''shot''—as far as possible. The shot put competition for men has been a part of the modern Olympics since their revival in 1896, and women's competition began in 1948. History Homer mentions competitions of rock throwing by soldiers during the Siege of Troy but there is no record of any dead weights being thrown in Greek competitions. The first evidence for stone- or weight-throwing events were in the Scottish Highlands, and date back to approximately the first century. In the 16th century King Henry VIII was noted for his prowess in court competitions of weight and hammer throwing. Shen Lijuan (; born 4 July 1958) is a Chinese female former track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. She is a three-time Asian champion and a former Asian record holder for the event. Shen was the first Chinese woman to have international success in the shot put. Odette Mistoul (married ''Kingbou''; born 22 February 1959) is a Gabonese former track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. Margaret "Meg" Elizabeth Stone (née Ritchie, born 6 July 1952) is a retired Scottish discus thrower and Shot putter. She reached the Olympic finals at discus in Moscow 1980 (9th) and Los Angeles 1984 (5th). She also won the 1982 Commonwealth Games title. Li Meisu (; born April 17, 1959, in Hebei) is a retired Chinese shot putter who won the bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Zdeňka Bartoňová-Šilhavá (born 15 June 1954 in Krnov, Czechoslovakia) is a retired female track and field athlete from the Czech Republic, who set the world record in the women's discus throw on 26 August 1984 with a distance of .
