1983 World Championships In Athletics – Women's 3000 Metres
These are the official results of the 3000 metres, Women's 3,000 metres event at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics, 1983 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. There were a total number of 26 participating athletes, with two qualifying heats and the final held on Wednesday 1983-08-10. The final was led from start to finish by Mary Decker, Mary Decker-Slaney, a common tactic for her in the USA, but untested at the world level. Marking her every move throughout the race was the Soviet pair of 1500 metres world record holder Tatyana Kazankina and 3000 metres world record holder Svetlana Ulmasova who expected to use their superior finishing speed. 3000 Metres
The 3000 metres or 3000-metre run is a track running event, also commonly known as the "3K" or "3K run", where 7.5 laps are run around an outdoor 400 m track, or 15 laps around a 200 m indoor track. It is debated whether the 3000m should be classified as a middle-distance or long-distance event. In elite-level competition, 3000 m pace is more comparable to the pace found in the longer 5000 metres event, rather than mile pace. The world record performance for 3000 m equates to a pace of 58.76 seconds per 400 m, which is closer to the 60.43 seconds for 5000 m than the 55.46 seconds for the mile. However, the 3000 m does require some anaerobic conditioning, and an elite athlete needs to develop a high tolerance to lactic acid, as does the mile runner. Marit Holtklimpen, married Sektnan (born 20 April 1959) is a retired Norwegian long-distance runner. She competed in the 3000 metres at the 1983 World Championships without reaching the final, and also recorded 87th and 92nd places at the 1983 and 1984 World Cross Country Championships. Brenda Webb (runner)
Brenda Webb is an indigenous Australian singer and actress. Her debut single "Little Black Girl" was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Independent Release. "Little Black Girl" was released in 1993 and received radio airplay all over the country. Another song "Melting Pot" (a cover a Blue Mink song) was used by NSW Aboriginal Land Council for an anti-racism campaign. "Little Black Girl" was originally credited as being written by Webb and Wendy May Dempster but was actually written primarily by Dempster and Christopher Lloyd Bowen who took legal action soon after the song's release. Monica Joyce (born July 16, 1958) is an English turned Irish turned American long distance runner. She is the younger sister of Irish marathoner Regina Joyce. Both sisters represented Ireland in the 1984 Summer Olympics, Regina in the Marathon and Monica in the 3000 meters. Previous to the Olympics Monica had represented Ireland at the 1982 European Athletics Championships, the 1983 World Championship and the 1984 World Cross Country Championships. Alison Wiley Rochon (born 11 October 1963) is a Canadian former long-distance runner. She was a World Cross Country runner-up in 1983. Wiley attended Stanford University and competed collegiately for the Stanford Cardinal track team. She was the 1982 winner of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship title in the 3000 metres. She won seven NCAA All-American honours, which included a runner-up spot in the 1984 NCAA 5000 metres and three straight second-place finishes at the NCAA Women's Division I Cross Country Championship from 1982 to 1984. She was inducted into the Stanford Cardinal hall of fame in 2006. Lorraine Mary Moller (born 1 June 1955) is a former athlete from New Zealand, who competed in track athletics and later specialised in the marathon. Moller's international career lasted over 20 years and included winning a silver medal in the marathon at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and a bronze medal in the marathon at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona at the age of 37. A four-time Olympian, she also completed the marathon at the 1984, 1988 and 1996 games. Christine Benning (née Tranter, born 30 March 1955) is an English former middle-distance runner who competed mainly in the 1500 metres and the 3000 metres. In the 1500 m, she represented Great Britain at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, finishing fifth in the final. She won a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.
