1983 World Championships In Athletics – Women's 200 Metres
These are the official results of the Women's 200 metres event at the 1983 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. There were a total number of 44 participating athletes, with six qualifying heats and the final held on Sunday 1983-08-14. Out of the blocks, world record holder Marita Koch in lane 6 slowly made up the stagger on Merlene Ottey in lane 7. By the time they hit the straightaway, Koch had two metres on Ottey who was about even with Florence Griffith in lane 1. Down the straightaway, Ottey steadily ate into Koch's lead while the long striding Kathy Cook came from behind to cruise past Griffith. Sensing the challenge from Ottey, Koch started to lean and struggle the last few steps, but realizing she had won she threw her arms up in victory. 200 Metres
The 200 metres, or 200-meter dash, is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400-metre racetrack, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques is needed to successfully run the race. A slightly shorter race, called the '' stadion'' and run on a straight track, was the first recorded event at the ancient Olympic Games. The 200 m places more emphasis on speed endurance than shorter sprint distances as athletes predominantly rely on anaerobic energy system during the 200 m sprint. Similarly to other sprint distances, the 200 m begins from the starting blocks. When the sprinters adopt the 'set' position in the blocks they are able to adopt a more efficient starting posture and isometrically preload their muscles. Nadezhda Georgieva
Nadezhda Georgieva (; born 7 September 1961) is a Bulgarian former sprinter. She won a silver medal in the sprint relay at the 1986 European Championships and reached the 200 metres final at the 1987 World Championships. She also represented her country at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Career Born in Gabrovo, Georgieva was a member of the club CSKA Sofia. Prevented from competing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics because of the Soviet-led boycott, she did win two medals at the 1984 Friendship Games, with bronze in the 200 metres and gold in the 4 x 100 metres relay. Joan Jeanetta Baptiste (born 12 October 1959) is a former British sprinter who competed mainly in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay. She won a silver medal at the inaugural World Championships in 1983 in the 4 × 100 m relay and competed in the 200 metres at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Biography Baptiste was born in St. Vincent and was a member of the Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club. Denise Margaret Boyd née Robertson (born 15 December 1952) is an Australian former Olympic sprinter, who reached two Olympic finals in the 200 metres sprint. Biography At the 1973 Pacific Conference Games in Toronto, Robertson won gold in the 200 metres and Sprint relay, as well as bronze in the 100 metres. The following year at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, she represented Australia and won three medals, including gold in the 4 x 100 metres. Angela Bailey (28 February 1962 – 31 July 2021) was a Canadian track and field athlete. She was the Canadian record holder in the 100 metres with her personal best of 10.98 seconds in 1987. She also holds the 200 metres indoor national record with 23.32 seconds in 1984. She won an Olympic silver medal in the 4×100 metres relay in 1984, three relay silver medals at the Commonwealth Games, and a bronze medal in the 60 metres at the 1987 World Indoor Championships. Aneliya Nuneva-Vechernikova (; born June 30, 1962) is a retired sprinter from Bulgaria who competed mainly in the 100 metres. In the final of the 100 m at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games she was drawn in lane four alongside the favorite, Florence Griffith-Joyner. She got out of the blocks well and challenged Griffith-Joyner up to about seventy metres when she abruptly pulled a muscle, resulting in her crossing the line in last place and injured.
