1983 Uruguayan Pro-democracy Demonstration
The 1983 Uruguayan pro-democracy demonstration, known as was a massive demonstration held at the Obelisk of the Constituents, Montevideo, Uruguay, on November 27, 1983. The objective of the act was to demand the end of the civil-military dictatorship and the holding of democratic elections. At the event, the only speaker, actor Alberto Candeau, read the proclamation, in which he called for a democratic transition. The demonstration was organized by an alliance built between the three political parties that had been legalized for the primary elections the previous year, an instance that marked progress in the democratic opening. The parties came together under the banner of "For a democratic Uruguay without exclusions”, and it is estimated that around 400,000 protesters participated, making it the largest demonstration in the history of the country. Obelisk Of Montevideo
The Obelisk of Montevideo, officially listed as the ''Obelisco a los Constituyentes de 1830'', is a monument created by sculptor José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín (1891-1975). It is a three-sided obelisk made of granite, tall with three bronze statues on its sides, representing "Law", "Liberty" and "Force". It has a hexagonal water fountain around it with six spheres on its outer circumference. It is located at the intersection of 18 de Julio and Artigas Boulevard avenues, in Montevideo, at the entrance of the Parque Batlle area. It was built in 1930 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Constitution of Uruguay and is an homage to the participants of the General Assembly of the first Constitution. Six years later, a similar but larger monument was built at the intersection of 9 de Julio and Corrientes avenues in Buenos Aires, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first founding of the city. Julio María Sanguinetti Coirolo (; born 6 January 1936 in Montevideo, Uruguay) is a Uruguayan politician, lawyer and journalist, who twice served as President of Uruguay (from March 1985 until March 1990, and again, from March 1995 until March 2000) for the Colorado Party (Uruguay), Partido Colorado. A lawyer and journalist by profession, he was born into a middle-class family of Italian origin from Genoa. He studied Law and Social Sciences at the University of the Republic. Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (born 26 November 1931) is an Argentine activist, community organizer, painter, writer and sculptor. He was the recipient of the 1980 Nobel Peace Prize for his opposition to Argentina's last civil-military dictatorship (1976–1983), during which he was detained, tortured, and held without trial for 14 months. He also received, among other distinctions, the Pacem in Terris Award. Carlos Parteli Keller (Rivera, 8 March 1910 – Montevideo, 26 May 1999) was a Uruguayan Roman Catholic cleric. Biography At 13 years of age he entered the Minor Seminary and at 16 he was sent to Rome by the second Bishop of Melo José Joaquín Arrospide to study at the South American College in Rome. He studied philosophy and theology and was ordained priest on Holy Saturday of 1933 in the Church of San Juan Bautista Berrán. On his return to Uruguay he served as parish priest of the Cathedral of Florida until 1939, when he became secretary of Bishop Miguel Paternain. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montevideo ( la, Archidioecesis Montisvidei) is an archdiocese of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic church in Uruguay. Zelmar Raúl Michelini Guarch (20 May 1924 – 20 May 1976) was a Uruguayan reporter and politician, assassinated in Buenos Aires in 1976 as part of Operation Condor. Elisa Delle Piane (27 March 1925 – 25 August 2008) was a Uruguayan human rights activist and politician, a member of the Broad Front. She was married to journalist and politician Zelmar Michelini. Biography Elisa Delle Piane was born in Montevideo on 27 March 1925. José D'Elía (21 June 1916 - 29 January 2007) was a Uruguayan labor leader and politician. Biography Born in Treinta y Tres, D'Elía worked as a shop employee and from his youth onwards he took part in the trade union movement. In 1942, he participated in the foundation of the General Union of Workers (UGT), and was the general secretary. Three years later, he participated in the creation of the Worldwide Labor Union Federation. Uruguay Tourné del Campo (13 May 1929 – 30 November 2022) was a Uruguayan politician. Background and early career In his youth, Tourné was an activist for the National Party (Uruguay). Tourné was an uncle to politician Daisy Tourné who served as Interior Minister.
