The 1983 All-Big Ten Conference football team consists of American football players chosen by various organizations for All-Big Ten Conference teams for the 1983 NCAA Division I-A football season, 1983 college football season. The 1983 Illinois Fighting Illini football team won the conference championship and had seven players selected as first-team player by either the Associated Press or United Press International. Iowa followed with six first-team selections, including quarterback Chuck Long and linebacker Larry Station. 1983 Big Ten Conference Football Season
The 1983 Big Ten Conference football season was the 88th season of college football played by the member schools of the Big Ten Conference and was a part of the 1983 NCAA Division I-A football season. The 1983 Big Ten champion was Illinois. The Illini compiled a 10-2 record (9-0 against Big Ten opponents). They were led quarterback Jack Trudeau with 2,446 passing yards, running back Thomas Rooks with 842 rushing yards, and wide receiver David Williams with 870 receiving yards. The 1983 Illini are the only Big Ten team to go 9-0 in regular season conference play, until Wisconsin went 9-0 in 2017. Keith Byars
Keith Alan Byars (born October 14, 1963) is an American sports broadcaster and former American football fullback in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and New York Jets. Early life Byars attended high school at the now-defunct Roth High School in Dayton, Ohio and Trotwood Madison High School, in Trotwood, Ohio. College career Byars was a tailback with the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1982 to 1985, under head coach Earle Bruce. In 1984, Byars finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting (behind Doug Flutie) after a season where he gained an OSU record 2,441 all-purpose yards, including a then-school record 1,764 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. James Melka
James David Melka (born January 15, 1962) is a former linebacker in the National Football League. Biography Melka was born on January 15, 1962, in West Allis, Wisconsin. He attended West Allis Central High School where he was an All-America running back. Carl Banks
Carl E. Banks (born August 29, 1962) is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played from 1984 to 1995 for the New York Giants, the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Browns. He played college football for the Michigan State Spartans. Kevin Craig Brooks (born February 9, 1963) is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions. Paul Hufford was a football player for the University of Iowa from 1982-1984. He was twice named All-Big Ten and was the first player to win the Big Ten’s Defensive Lineman of the Year award in 1984. John Alt
John Michael Alt (born May 30, 1962) is a former professional American football offensive tackle in the National Football League. He played his entire NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1984 to 1996. A graduate of Columbia Heights (MN) High School, he played his college years at the University of Iowa. After retiring from the NFL, Alt began assistant coaching at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in Saint Paul, Minnesota, working with the offensive line. Joseph J. Levelis (born January 6, 1961) is a former American football offensive tackle in the United States Football League (USFL) for the Oklahoma and Arizona Outlaws. He played college football at the University of Iowa. Early years Levelis attended Lindenhurst Senior High School, where he was a starter at offensive tackle. Tim Brewster (born October 13, 1960) is an American football coach and former player who is currently the tight ends coach for the University of Colorado. He also served as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for the North Carolina Tar Heels football program.
