During the 1982–83 English football season, Watford F.C. competed in the Football League First Division, after being promoted from the Second Division the previous season. Under Graham Taylor's management, Watford finished second in the First Division – their highest ever league finish. As a result, Watford qualified for European competition for the first time. Watford F
Watford () is a town and borough in Hertfordshire, England, 15 miles northwest of Central London, on the River Colne. Initially a small market town, the Grand Junction Canal encouraged the construction of paper-making mills, print works, and breweries. While industry has declined in Watford, its location near London and transport links has attracted several companies to site their headquarters in the town. Cassiobury Park is a public park that was once the manor estate of the Earls of Essex. The town developed next to the River Colne on land belonging to St Albans Abbey. In the 12th century, a charter was granted allowing a market, and the building of St Mary's Church began. The town grew partly due to travellers going to Berkhamsted Castle and the royal palace at Kings Langley. A mansion was built at Cassiobury in the 16th century. Ian Bolton
Ian Robert Bolton (born 13 July 1953) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League as a central defender for Notts County, Lincoln City, Watford and Brentford. Bolton was born in Leicester and began his career as an apprentice with Birmingham City. He turned professional on joining Notts County in March 1972. He joined Lincoln City on loan in August 1976 and transferred to Watford in August 1977 for a fee of £12,500. He was described by manager Graham Taylor as the best signing he made and played for Watford, in both midfield and defence, as they climbed from the Fourth Division to the top flight. Jan Lohman
Johannes Hermanus Petrus "Jan" Lohman (born 18 February 1959) is a Dutch former association football, footballer. He played as a central midfielder, and represented his country at Netherlands U-21 national football team, under-21 level. Born in Dussen, North Brabant, Lohman played for several Belgian and Dutch clubs, and also spent five seasons in English football with Watford F.C., Watford. Playing career Lohman started his career at Sporting Lokeren in Belgium, and was subsequently loaned to Dutch sides Fortuna Vlaardingen, Vlaardingen and NEC Nijmegen. Les Taylor (footballer)
Leslie Taylor (born 4 December 1956 in North Shields, Northumberland) is an English former footballer who captained Watford in the 1984 FA Cup Final. He played as a hard-working central-midfielder. Graham Taylor, his Watford manager, described him as "sniffer and a ratter". Career Taylor started his career at Oxford United, signing professional terms in December 1974. He moved to Watford in November 1980 for £100,000 plus Keith Cassells. He was part of the Watford side that achieved promotion to Division One in the 1981–82 season, winning the Player of the Season award that year. In the 1983–84 season Watford reached the final of the FA Cup. Watford's captain, Wilf Rostron, was sent off in a league fixture against Luton Town preceding the final and incurred a suspension. Nigel Callaghan
Nigel Ian Callaghan (born 12 September 1962) is a former professional footballer. Playing career Callaghan played on the right-wing for a number of clubs including; Watford, Derby County and Aston Villa. Internationally, he represented England at Under-21 level and played one game for England B in November 1984 (alongside fellow Watford player Luther Blissett). Callaghan came on as a half time substitute to take part in a 2–0 win against a full New Zealand side. Whilst at Watford, he played in the 1984 FA Cup Final where they lost to Everton. John Barnes (footballer)
John Charles Bryan Barnes MBE (born 7 November 1963) is a former professional football player and manager. He currently works as an author, commentator and pundit for ESPN and SuperSport. Initially a quick, skilful left winger, he moved to central midfield later in his career. Barnes won two league titles with Liverpool, with whom he also won two cup finals at Wembley. He was also an FA Cup runner-up with Watford, Liverpool and Newcastle United. Barnes earned 79 international caps for England. Barnes was born and initially raised in Jamaica as the son of a military officer from Trinidad and Tobago and a Jamaican mother. He moved to London, England with his family when he was 12 years old. Pat Rice
Patrick James Rice, MBE (born 17 March 1949) is a Northern Irish former footballer and coach. As a player, he made over 500 appearances for Arsenal, winning the Double, and later made a hundred more appearances for Watford. He also won 49 caps for Northern Ireland. After retirement from playing professionally he was at the helm of Arsenal's Academy teams, then served as assistant manager of Arsenal, a position he held since the appointment of Arsène Wenger in 1996, and helped the club to two more Doubles, amongst other silverware, in that time. Kenneth Francis Jackett (born 5 January 1962) is a former professional football player and manager, who is currently Director of Football at club Gillingham. A skilful left-footed player, able to play in defence or midfield, Jackett was capped 31 times for Wales. He spent his entire playing career at Watford before his career was ended by injury at the age of 28. Having moved on to the club's coaching staff, he began his managerial career during the 1996–97 season. John Wilfred Rostron (born 29 September 1956) is an English former footballer who made nearly 500 appearances in the Football League. He spent ten years with Watford and had shorter spells with Arsenal, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Brentford. He started off as a left-winger but then spent most of his career as a left-back. Playing career Rostron started his career at Arsenal, signing professional terms in October 1973 after a season as an amateur playing in Arsenal's youth team. He made his first-team debut against Newcastle United on 18 March 1975 and played a total of six league matches that season. However, he could not fully break into the Arsenal first team, making only 19 appearances for the club in three seasons, scoring two goals. Neil Price (born 15 February 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played as a left back. Playing career Born in Hemel Hempstead, Price played for Watford, Plymouth Argyle, Blackpool and Swansea City, making a total of 25 appearances in the Football League. He retired from professional football in 1988 due to a knee injury, and played non-league football with Wycombe Wanderers, Wealdstone and Staines Town.
