The 1982 United States Senate election in Rhode Island took place on November 2, 1982. Incumbent Republican Senator John Chafee successfully sought re-election to a second term, very narrowly defeating Democrat Julius C. Michaelson. Flynn Results General election Results Republican Chafee was re-elected but received a lower percentage of the vote than in 1974. Michaelson had better name recognition than Chafee’s previous opponent. Michaelson won Providence County, the state’s most populous county, but Chafee was still able to win the state. This was the closest election of his career. John Chafee
John Lester Hubbard Chafee ( ; October 22, 1922 – October 24, 1999) was an American politician and officer in the United States Marine Corps. A member of the Republican Party (United States), he served as the 66th Governor of Rhode Island, as the Secretary of the Navy, and as a United States Senator. Early life and family Chafee was born in Providence, Rhode Island, to a politically active family. He was the son of Janet Melissa (née Hunter) and John Sharpe Chafee. His great-grandfather, Henry Lippitt, was governor of Rhode Island (1875–1877) and among his great-uncles were a Rhode Island governor, Charles Warren Lippitt, and United States Senator Henry Frederick Lippitt. His uncle, Zechariah Chafee, was a Harvard law professor, and a notable civil libertarian. 1982 United States Senate Elections
The 1982 United States Senate elections were held on November 2, 1982. They were elections for the United States Senate following Republican gains in 1980. A total of four seats changed hands between parties, with Democrats winning seats in New Jersey and New Mexico, and Republicans taking seats in Nevada and the seat of the lone independent, Senator Harry Byrd Jr., in Virginia. Democrats made a net gain of one seat in the elections, while Republicans stayed at 54 seats for a majority. A special election was held in Washington state in 1983 that gave Republicans a seat that was previously held by a Democrat, bringing their majority to 55-45. As of , this is the last time Democrats won a U.S. Senate election in Mississippi and the last time Republicans won one in Connecticut.
