Haley Barbour
Haley Reeves Barbour (born October 22, 1947) is an American attorney, politician, and lobbyist who served as the 63rd governor of Mississippi from 2004 to 2012. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1993 to 1997. Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Barbour graduated from the University of Mississippi with undergraduate and law degrees, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Barbour was an active Republican operative during the 1970s and 1980s, and he is often credited with building significant Republican infrastructure in Mississippi during an era when it was still dominated by Southern Democrats. He was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in 1982, but lost to incumbent Democrat John C. Stennis. Charles Pittman (politician)
Charles Pittman (born July 6, 1948) is a former Mississippi State Senator (1980–1984) from Grenada, Mississippi. Since January, 2004, Pittman has been a Constituent Services/Special Project Consultant on Governor Haley Barbour's staff. In 1982, Pittman ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary against Senator John C. Stennis. Because of the 1982 Stennis Race, Pittman is listed in Forrest Lamar Cooper's book, "Mississippi Trivia," as the Mississippian having received the most votes ever in any Democratic primary campaign against Stennis, receiving 33,651 votes. Stennis later defeated Barbour in the 1982 general election. In 1983, Pittman was edged out in a crowded Democratic primary for Mississippi Secretary of State. The 1982 United States Senate elections were held on November 2, 1982. They were elections for the United States Senate following Republican gains in 1980. A total of four seats changed hands between parties, with Democrats winning seats in New Jersey and New Mexico, and Republicans taking seats in Nevada and the seat of the lone independent, Senator Harry Byrd Jr., in Virginia. Democrats made a net gain of one seat in the elections, while Republicans stayed at 54 seats for a majority. A special election was held in Washington state in 1983 that gave Republicans a seat that was previously held by a Democrat, bringing their majority to 55-45.
