The 1982 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the 101st season of the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise; their 96th in the National League. This was their 13th season at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pirates finished fourth in the National League East with a record of 84–78, eight games behind the eventual NL and World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. National League East
The National League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. Along with the American League Central it is one of two divisions to have every member win at least one World Series title. The division was created when the National League (along with the American League) added two expansion teams and divided into two divisions, East and West effective for the 1969 season. The National League's geographical alignment was rather peculiar as its partitioning was really more north and south instead of east and west. Two teams in the Eastern Time Zone, the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds, were in the same division as teams on the Pacific coast. This was due to the demands of the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, who refused to support expansion unless they were promised they would be kept together in the newly created East division. KDKA () is a Class A, clear channel, AM radio station, owned and operated by Audacy, Inc. and licensed to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Its radio studios are located at the combined Audacy Pittsburgh facility in the Foster Plaza on Holiday Drive in Green Tree, and its transmitter site is at Allison Park. The station's programming is also carried over 93.7 KDKA-FM's HD2 digital subchannel, and is simulcast on FM translator W261AX at 100.1 MHz. KDKA features a news/talk radio format. The 1982 Los Angeles Dodgers entered the season as the defending World Series champions. They would remain in contention until the final day of the regular season, when the San Francisco Giants would knock them out of the National League West division race, in a season that saw the Atlanta Braves reach the playoffs instead. The Cincinnati Reds' 1982 season was a season in American baseball. It involved the Reds finishing in sixth place in the National League West Division, with a record of 61 wins and 101 losses, 28 games behind the Atlanta Braves. The Reds played their home games at Riverfront Stadium. John McNamara managed the club to a 34–58 start before being replaced in late July by Russ Nixon, who compiled a 27–43 record the rest of the year. 1982 was the first time that the Reds finished in last place since 1937, as well as their first losing season since 1971, the team's first full season at Riverfront.
