The president is the nominal head of the executive, the first citizen of the country, as well as the commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces. The governor of Jammu and Kashmir was the head of the Indian state Jammu and Kashmir. When India became independent, Hari Singh was the Maharaja of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir. Technically he remained so until 17 November 1952, although from 20 June 1949 his son Karan Singh acted as regent. From 17 November 1952 to 30 March 1965, Karan Singh was the elected as the Sadr-e-Riyasat of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The governors have similar powers and functions at the state level as those of the President of India at central level. Air Chief Marshal (India), Air Chief Marshal Idris Hasan Latif, Param Vishist Seva Medal, PVSM (9 June 1923 – 30 April 2018) was a former air officer in the Indian Air Force. He served as the Chief of Air Staff (India), 10th Chief of Air Staff (CAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) from 1978 to 1981. After retiring from the air force, he served as List of governors of Maharashtra, 11th Governor of Maharashtra from 1982 to 1985. Air Chief Marshal Om Prakash Mehra, PVSM (19 January 1919 – 8 November 2015) was a former air officer in the Indian Air Force. He served as the Chief of the Air Staff from 1973 to 1976. He received Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), the highest military award for peace-time service, in 1968. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour, in 1977. He later became Governor of Maharashtra from 1980 to 1982, and Governor of Rajasthan from 1985 to 1987. The governor of Kerala is the constitutional head of state of the southern Indian state of Kerala. The governor is appointed by the president of India for a term of five years and holds office at the president's pleasure. The governor is ''de jure'' head of the government of Kerala; all its executive actions are taken in the governor's name.
