The 1982 California Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 18, 1982 at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California. The game pitted the Bowling Green Falcons and the Fresno State Bulldogs. Background The Falcons opened their season with three straight conference wins (over Ohio, Central Michigan and Western Michigan). A loss to Miami (OH) stopped the streak, though they did beat Northern Illinois the week after. A loss to Toledo was their last conference loss as Bowling Green won the next three games over Kent State, Ball State, and Eastern Michigan. They closed their season out with losses to Long Beach State and North Carolina. This was Bowling Green's first Mid-American Conference title since 1965 and first ever bowl appearance. Jim Sweeney (American Football, Born 1929)
James Joseph Sweeney (September 1, 1929 – February 8, 2013) was an American football player and coach, the head coach at Montana State University (1963–1967), Washington State University (1968–1975), and California State University, Fresno (1976–1977, 1980–1996), compiling a career college football record of Sweeney's 144 wins at Fresno State are the most in the program's history. Early years Born in Butte, Montana, Sweeney was the youngest of seven children of Will and Kate Sweeney; his father was a hard-rock miner who emigrated from Ireland. As a youth in Butte, he was a top pitcher and outfielder in baseball, and graduated from Butte Central Catholic High School in 1947. Sweeney played college football as an end at the University of Portland in Oregon, and graduated in 1951. 1946 Raisin Bowl
The 1946 Raisin Bowl was a college football bowl game played between Drake Bulldogs and Fresno State Bulldogs at Ratcliffe Stadium in Fresno, California. The game marked the first bowl game for Drake and the third for Fresno State. It was sponsored by the Fresno Chambers of Commerce, in the first Raisin Bowl. Game summary The Drake took the early 6–0 first quarter lead on a Wallace Rooker one-yard run, but missed the PAT. Fresno State scored a second-quarter touchdown courtesy of a Jack Kelly 19-yard run, tying the game 6–6. The ensuing PAT was blocked by Drake, leading to a 6–6 halftime score. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs took their only lead of the game on a Mel Gustafson one-yard run. Fresno State again missed the PAT. Bowling Green Falcons Football Bowl Games
Bowling is a target sport and recreational activity in which a player rolls a ball toward pins (in pin bowling) or another target (in target bowling). The term ''bowling'' usually refers to pin bowling (most commonly ten-pin bowling), though in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, bowling could also refer to target bowling, such as lawn bowls. California Bowl
The California Bowl (later the California Raisin Bowl) was a post-season college football bowl game played annually at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California, from 1981 to 1991. The game featured the champions of the Big West Conference (known prior to 1988 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) and the Mid-American Conference. In 1988, the California Raisin Advisory Board purchased the naming rights to the bowl. The game was dealt a severe blow in 1992 when Fresno State moved to the Western Athletic Conference. The MAC and Big West then moved their tie-ins to Las Vegas, Nevada and created the Las Vegas Bowl. The California Bowl made plans to hold the 1992 game without tie-ins, but was unable to find a new sponsor. When organizers came up short of a $1.75 million fundraising goal, the NCAA pulled the bowl's certification. 1988 California Bowl
The 1988 California Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 10, 1988 at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California. The game pitted the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Western Michigan Broncos. Background The Broncos started the season with a non-conference win over Wisconsin, and they promptly won the next four games (including three conference games) before a loss to Kent State. It was their only conference loss (though they did lose to independent and future MAC member Northern Illinois), closing out the season with a 23–16 win over Ohio. The 1991 California Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 14, 1991 at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California. The game pitted the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Bowling Green Falcons. Background After five seasons that had ranged from mediocre to abysmal, the Falcons replaced Moe Ankney with Gary Blackney, an assistant coach from Ohio State. He began his tenure with a 17-6 win over Eastern Michigan and a 24-17 loss to West Virginia. After that, the Falcons did not lose another game for the rest of the season, winning all eight of their MAC games to win the Mid-American Conference for the first time since 1985. This was their third bowl game in school history, and it was yet another game versus Fresno State, who had beaten them twice in 1982 and 1985. Jeff Tedford
Jeffrey Raye Tedford (born November 2, 1961) is an American football coach and former player who is currently serving as the head coach at Fresno State, a position which he also previously held from 2017 to 2019. From 2002 to 2012, Tedford was the head football coach at California, where he was twice named Pac-10 Coach of the Year and holds the California program records for most wins, games coached, and bowl game victories. Tedford played college football for Fresno State before playing professionally at quarterback in the Canadian Football League (CFL). In his first head coaching position, Tedford inherited a Cal team that had won only one game in its 2001 season. He was named conference coach of the year in his first season in 2002 after winning seven games. Cal was ranked No. 2 nationwide midseason in 2007, the school's highest ranking since 1951. Stephone Paige (born October 15, 1961), is a former professional American football player who played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1983 to 1992. Brian McClure
Brian McClure (born December 28, 1963) is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League for the Buffalo Bills. He played college football at Bowling Green. College career McClure played for the Falcons from 1982–85, where he set numerous offensive records. His 900 completions and 10,280 yards passing are both school records. He also threw 63 touchdowns which was the school record until Omar Jacobs threw 71 from 2003–05. The Mercy Bowl was the name to two one-off charity bowl games played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The first was played between Fresno State University and Bowling Green State University on November 23, 1961, as a special fundraiser in memory of sixteen Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo football players killed in a plane crash following a game against Bowling Green a year earlier.
