1982 Australian Open – Men's Singles
Defending champion Johan Kriek defeated Steve Denton in a rematch of the previous year's final, 6–3, 6–3, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1982 Australian Open. Kriek saved a match point en route to the title, against Paul McNamee in the semifinals. The format of this year's tournament was best of 5 sets in the first two rounds, best of 3 sets in rounds 3 and 4, then best of 5 sets for the rest of the tournament. Johan Kriek
Johan Christiaan Kriek (born April 5, 1958) is a South African-American retired tennis player and founder of the Global Water Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering clean water to the world's neediest communities. He won two Australian Open titles and reached the semifinals at the French Open and US Open, as well as the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Kriek won 14 professional singles and eight doubles titles, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 7 in September 1984. He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Afrikaans High School for Boys, also known as Affies), a public school located in Pretoria. Kriek became a naturalized American citizen in August 1982. Drew Gitlin
Drew Gitlin (born May 26, 1958) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. As a qualifier, Gitlin reached the third round of the gentlemen's singles event at Wimbledon in 1982 where he lost to eventual champion Jimmy Connors. Damir Keretić (born 26 March 1960) is a ex-professional tennis player who represented West Germany in Davis Cup in the 1980s. Biography The only title he won during his career was the Challenger tournament in Naples, Italy in 1981. By getting to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in December 1982 the right-hander reached a high singles ATP-ranking on 7 February 1983, when he became number 58 in the world. Larry Stefanki (born July 23, 1957), is an American tennis coach and former professional tennis player. Tennis career He played for nine years starting in 1979, reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 35 in singles after winning the Indian Wells Masters at La Quinta in 1985 as well as three in doubles. He is one of three Stefanki brothers to have played on the varsity tennis team at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 until 1979 under coach Bill Wright. As a freshman in 1976 at Foothill College, he won the California Junior College Championship in Singles and Doubles. Rand Evett (born March 1, 1954) is an American former professional tennis player. Evett, the son of a Yale physics instructor, was raised in Tucson, Arizona, where he attended Catalina High School. During the early 1970s he played collegiate tennis for the University of Arizona and won back to back WAC singles championships in 1972 and 1973. He also earned NCAA All-American honors in 1973 and 1974. In 1974 he and De Armond Briggs won the doubles title at the national amateur grass‐court championships. Juan Farrow
Juan Farrow is a prominent African-American tennis player and coach. He was launched in his tennis career by a neighbor in Lynchburg, Virginia, Dr. Robert Walter Johnson, who also mentored Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson. Biography At the age of four Juan Farrow began hitting tennis balls interminably against a wall with a broomstick, under the tutelage of his neighbor, Dr. Johnson. Since African-Americans were not allowed on the public courts in Virginia, Johnson sent Farrow, as he had Ashe, to Sumner High School in St. Louis to learn under the coaching of Richard Hudlin, a tennis star at the University of Chicago in the 1920s who helped break down racial barriers. Hudlin lived at the vacated St. Louis Armory while hosting the best young tennis players in the St. Louis area to hone their games on the 6 hardwood courts. Tim Gullikson
Timothy Ernest Gullikson (September 8, 1951 – May 3, 1996) was a tennis player and coach who was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin and grew up in Onalaska, Wisconsin in the United States. Gullikson was Pete Sampras' coach from 1992 to 1995. Tennis career In 1977, he won three tour singles titles and was named the ATP's Newcomer of the Year. During his career as a tennis player, Gullikson won 15 top-level doubles titles, ten of them partnering with his identical twin brother, Tom Gullikson. The brothers were runners-up in the Men's Doubles competition at Wimbledon in 1983. Craig A Miller
Craig A. Miller (18 October 1962 – August 2021) was a professional tennis player from Australia. Junior years Miller was the boys' singles champion at the 1980 Australian Open, beating Wally Masur in the final. The Australian had been runner-up the previous year, to Greg Whitecross. He was also a semi-finalist at the 1980 US Open and with Pat Cash won the doubles title at the 1982 Australian Open. Wayne Hampson (born 23 August 1957) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Career Hampson competed in the main singles draw of the Australian Open three times and Wimbledon twice, without managing to register a win. The closest he got was at the 1982 Australian Open, where he received a first round bye, before a five set loss in the second round to Eric Sherbeck, the last decided in a tiebreak. Dale Collings (born 16 December 1955) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Career Collings, who was known for his fast serves, won the Wimbledon Plate in 1978. He twice made the third round of the Australian Open, in 1978 and 1982. Eric Sherbeck (born August 7, 1957) is an American former professional tennis player. Biography Sherbeck was born in Missoula, Montana, the son of Hal Sherbeck, an athletics coach at the University of Montana. Early in his childhood the family moved to California and his father began a famed career as the athletic director and football coach at Fullerton College. After graduating from El Dorado High School, Sherbeck went to Arizona State University, where he was the No. 1 singles player in the varsity tennis team. He graduated with a business administration degree in 1980, then turned to professional tennis. Primarily as a doubles specialist, Sherbeck competed on the international tennis circuit until 1985.
