The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". The 1981 Wimbledon Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament ran from 22 June until 4 July. It was the 95th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the second Grand Slam tennis event of 1981. For the first time in the tournament's history there were no seeded British players in the singles draws. Prize money The total prize money for 1981 championships was £322,136. The winner of the men's title earned £21,600 while the women's singles champion earned £19,440. Kate Gompert (born January 11, 1963) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Gompert had a career record of 77–78. She had a career high singles ranking of world no. 18 in July 1987. Her biggest career win occurred in 1987 at the Virginia Slims of Florida when she defeated the defending champion and first-seeded Chris Evert in three sets. Hans Schwaier
Hans Schwaier (born 24 March 1964) is a former professional tennis player from West Germany. Career Schwaier was runner-up to Thomas Högstedt in the boys' singles at the 1981 US Open, the same year he also reached the Wimbledon semi-finals and made it to number three in the world junior rankings. The West German turned professional in 1983 and was semi-finalist at Kitzbühel that year. He reached the semi-finals at Barcelona in 1984 and en route defeated world number 14 Tomáš Šmíd, for the second time in the space of two months. His best year was 1985, when he made his only Grand Prix final, at the 1985 BMW Open and also reached the semi-finals in Bari and Nice, as well as making it to the quarter-final stage in Basel and Indianapolis. Steve Denton
Steve Denton (born September 5, 1956) is a former professional tennis player for the ATP Tour. He is currently the head men's tennis coach at Texas A&M University. After becoming an all-American at the University of Texas in 1978, Denton spent nine seasons playing for the ATP Tour. He reached the final of both the 1981 and 1982 Australian Open, and won the 1982 US Open doubles championship with Kevin Curren, attaining career-high rankings of World No. 12 in singles and World No. 2 in doubles. He won a total of 18 tour level doubles titles and, despite reaching 6 finals, never won a singles title. In 1984, his serve broke the world record, which would not be broken until 13 years later. After retiring from the pros, he moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, coaching several local junior tennis teams.
