1981 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – Senior Women's Race
The Senior women's race at the 1981 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Madrid, Spain, at the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela on March 28, 1981. A report on the event was given in the Glasgow Herald. Complete results, medallists, and the results of British athletes were published. World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation (from 1912 to 2001) and International Association of Athletics Federations (from 2001 to 2019, both abbreviated as the IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running. Dorthe Skovshoved Rasmussen (born 27 January 1960 in Copenhagen, Denmark) is a retired female long-distance runner from Denmark. Cristina Tomasini (born 26 July 1958) is an Italian female retired long-distance runner, which participated at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics. Biography Her best result at International level was the 5th place at the 1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, competition when she won also three important medals with the team, while at European level her best result was the victory at IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Formia in 1982. She won four times the national championships at senior level. Her performance on the 5000 metres in 1980, when she was under 23, was the third time in Europe. Jane Elizabeth Shields (née Furniss, born 23 August 1960) is a female English former middle and long-distance runner. Irina Bondarchuk
Irina Bondarchuk (russian: Ирина Бондарчук; born 17 September 1952) is a Russian former Soviet long-distance runner. Bondarchuk's greatest successes were in cross country running. She was the individual silver medallist at the 1980 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and took three team titles between 1977 and 1981. She also placed fourth individually in 1979 and took a team silver medal in 1985. This was a period of much success for the Soviet women, with Lyudmila Bragina, Yelena Sipatova, Giana Romanova and Svetlana Ulmasova being other leading Soviet athletes of the time. In track running, Bondarchuk was a four-time national champion with one indoor and one outdoor title in the 3000 metres and two title in the 5000 metres. Carla Beurskens
Carolina ("Carla") Alwina Hubertina Beurskens (born 10 February 1952) was one of Holland's most prominent female long-distance runners from the second half of the 1970s until well into the 1990s, including all distances from 3000 metres to the marathon. During the greater part of this period she was most successful at the longer distance. The variety of the twenty-three national titles she obtained during her long carrier clearly shows to what extent Beurskens dominated all aspects of the métier: three titles on indoor- and five on outdoor tracks, nine on the road and six in the cross country. Cornelia Bürki (born 3 October 1953) is a South African-born retired long-distance runner who represented Switzerland in three consecutive Olympic Games, starting in 1980, with her best result being fifth in the 1984 3000 metres final. She is a 47-time Swiss national outdoor champion, which includes a fifteen-year undefeated streak in cross country and fifteen consecutive titles over 1500 metres, from 1975 to 1989. Lynn Kanuka-Williams ( Kanuka; born July 11, 1960) is a Canadian athlete from Regina, Saskatchewan. She competed in 3000m races, as well as a smaller number of 1500m races. She competed for Canada at the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, U.S. in the 3,000 metres where she won the bronze medal (in the race notable for the incident between Mary Decker and Zola Budd). Ingrid Kristiansen (née Christensen on 21 March 1956) is a Norwegian former athlete. She was one of the best female long-distance runners during the 1980s. She is a former world record holder in the 5000 metres, 10,000 metres and the marathon (at one point in time she held those records simultaneously). Kristiansen was a World Champion on the track, roads and cross-country, becoming the first athlete to win World titles on all three surfaces.
