1980–81 Colchester United F.C. Season
The 1980–81 season was Colchester United's 39th season in their history and fourth successive season in third tier of English football, the Third Division. Alongside competing in the Third Division, the club also participated in the FA Cup and the League Cup. On the back of the success of the previous season, Colchester crashed out of the Third Division, relegated in 22nd-position. Several winless streaks contributed to their downfall. In the cup competitions, the U's were defeated in the first round of the League Cup by Gillingham, while Watford overcame Colchester in the third round of the FA Cup. The Football League Third Division was the third tier of the English football league system in 1920–21 and again from 1958 until 1992. When the FA Premier League was formed, the division become the fourth tier level. In 2004, following the formation of the Football League Championship, the division was renamed Football League Two. Ipswich () is a port town and borough in Suffolk, England, of which it is the county town. The town is located in East Anglia about away from the mouth of the River Orwell and the North Sea. Roger Charles Osborne (born 9 March 1950) is a former professional association football, footballer who is best known for scoring the winning goal in the 1978 FA Cup Final. Biography Born in Otley, Suffolk, Otley, East Suffolk (county), East Suffolk in 1950, Osborne was signed by Ipswich Town F.C., Ipswich Town from Suffolk and Ipswich Football League, Suffolk & Ipswich League club Westerfield United in October 1970. He made his league debut on 27 October 1973 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Portman Road, Ipswich Town winning 2–0. In 1978, he was part of the Ipswich team that won the FA Cup against Arsenal F.C., Arsenal, scoring the winning goal in the 77th minute, in a 1–0 victory. Trevor Carl Lee (born 3 July 1954 in Lewisham) is an English former professional footballer. He played for Cobham, Epsom & Ewell, Millwall, Colchester United, Gillingham, Leyton Orient, AFC Bournemouth, Cardiff City, Northampton Town and Fulham between 1975 and 1985. Mel Blyth
Melvin Bernard Blyth (born 28 July 1944) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre back. During his playing career, he joined Scunthorpe United in 1967. One year later, he signed for Crystal Palace before joining Southampton with whom he won the FA Cup in 1976. He also spent time with Cape Town City, Margate, Millwall, Houston Hurricane, Bulova SA and Andover. Club career Norwich City and Scunthorpe United Blyth started his football career with non-league Great Yarmouth. He then joined Norwich City, although he never made an appearance in the first team. Stephen Roger Bruce (born 31 December 1960) is an English professional Manager (association football), football manager and former Football player, player who played as a centre-back. He most recently managed West Bromwich Albion F.C., West Bromwich Albion. Born in Corbridge, Northumberland, he was a promising schoolboy footballer but was rejected by several professional clubs. Nigel Crouch
Nigel John Crouch (born 24 November 1958) is an English former professional footballer who played as a full-back in the Football League for Lincoln City on loan from Ipswich Town, and for Colchester United. Crouch began his career with Ipswich, where he progressed through the youth team. He earned a professional contract in 1978, but failed to make a first-team appearance for the Suffolk club. He was loaned out to Lincoln City in 1979, where he made his professional debut, going on to make seven appearances. Following his release from Ipswich in the summer of 1980, he joined local rivals Colchester United, where he became the club's first-ever player to be sent off on his debut. He went on to make ten further league appearances for the U's, but he was released at the end of the season.
