The 1980 United States Senate election in Hawaii took place on November 4, 1980. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye won re-election to a fourth term in yet another landslide, despite the national 'Reagan Revolution' and the state's very narrow margin of victory for Jimmy Carter in the concurrent presidential election. Daniel Inouye
Daniel Ken Inouye ( ; September 7, 1924 – December 17, 2012) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a United States senator from Hawaii from 1963 until his death in 2012. Beginning in 1959, he was the first U.S. representative for the State of Hawaii, and a Medal of Honor recipient. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as the president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 2010 until his death. Inouye was the highest-ranking Asian-American politician in U.S. history, until Kamala Harris became vice president in 2021. Inouye also chaired various senate committees, including those on Intelligence, Indian Affairs, Commerce, and Appropriations. Inouye fought in World War II as part of the 442nd Infantry Regiment. He lost his right arm to a grenade wound and received several military decorations, including the Medal of Honor (the nation's highest military award). Jimmy Carter
James Earl Carter Jr. (born October 1, 1924) is an American politician who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he previously served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and as a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. Since leaving office, Carter has remained engaged in political and social projects, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his humanitarian work. Born and raised in Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree and joined the United States Navy, serving on numerous submarines. After the death of his father in 1953, he left his naval career and returned home to Plains, where he assumed control of his family's peanut-growing business. The 1980 United States presidential election in Hawaii took place on November 4, 1980. All 50 states and The District of Columbia, were part of the 1980 United States presidential election. Hawaii voters chose four electors to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Hawaii was won by President Jimmy Carter (D) by 1.9 points. Hawaii is a very liberal state, and both of the state's U.S. senators have been Democrats since 1977, which is partly the reason Reagan lost, albeit very narrowly. As of 2020, this is the second of two times (the first being 1960) in which not all of Hawaii's counties voted for the same candidate. This was the second of three times in which Oahu supported a Republican on the presidential level. 1980 United States Senate Elections
The 1980 United States Senate elections coincided with Ronald Reagan's victory in the presidential election. Reagan's large margin of victory over incumbent Jimmy Carter gave a huge boost to Republican Senate candidates, allowing them to flip 12 Democratic seats and win control of the chamber for the first time since the end of the 83rd Congress in January 1955. This is the last time that a chamber of Congress changes hands in a presidential year until 2020. This is one of only five occasions where ten or more Senate seats changed hands in an election, with the others being in 1920, 1932, 1946, and 1958. As of 2022, this is the last time Republicans won a U.S. Senate election in Maryland. This is the earliest Senate election with a Senator that is still serving, that being Chuck Grassley of Iowa.
