The 1980 Tangerine Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 20, 1980 at Orlando Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The game pitted the Florida Gators and the Maryland Terrapins. Background The Terrapins improved upon their record, rising from 7 to 8 victories, though they once again finished 2nd place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, this time to North Carolina, who were invited to the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl. Charley Pell
Charles Byron Pell (February 17, 1941 – May 29, 2001) was an American college American football, football player and coach. Pell was an Alabama native and an alumnus of the University of Alabama, where he played college football. He is most notably remembered as the head coach of the Clemson University and the University of Florida football teams. Pell was credited with laying the foundation for the later success of both programs, but his coaching career was tainted by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules violations. The Citrus Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The bowl is operated by Florida Citrus Sports, a non-profit group that also organizes the Cheez-It Bowl and Florida Classic. The game was first played as the Tangerine Bowl in 1947 before being renamed as the Florida Citrus Bowl in 1983. The 1998 Florida Citrus Bowl featured the Florida Gators and the Penn State Nittany Lions. The 1983 Florida Citrus Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 17, 1983 at Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The game pitted the Tennessee Volunteers and the Maryland Terrapins. Michael Peter Tice (born February 2, 1959) is a former American football tight end and coach. He played college football at the University of Maryland, College Park and spent 11 seasons playing in the National Football League (NFL) before spending 22 seasons as a coach, including four seasons as the Minnesota Vikings head coach. Dale Castro (born November 26, 1959) is a former American college and professional football player and coach. He played college football for the University of Maryland as a record-setting placekicker and All-American. Castro had a brief professional career in the Arena Football League, and then spent two decades coaching high school football. Early life and college Castro was born in 1959 and grew up in Shady Side, Maryland. He attended the University of Maryland with the intention of earning a scholarship as a baseball pitcher, but contracted mononucleosis during his first semester which caused him to miss the try-outs.
