1980 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony of the 1980 Summer Olympics was the official opening ceremony held in the afternoon at 16:00 Moscow Time ( UTC+3) on 19 July 1980 in the Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium. It was attended by the General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party and the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet Presidium, Leonid Brezhnev, and IOC President Lord Killanin. The 1980 opening ceremonies started a trend which changed the format of the ceremonies. Prior to 1980, Olympic opening ceremonies were truly "ceremonial", consisting of just the parade of nations and rituals associated with the official opening of the Games. The USSR wanted to put on a spectacle to impress the rest of the world, so an artistic performance was included after the ceremonial parts were finished. Since then, subsequent opening ceremonies have expanded on the artistic program, and it is now seen as the main event at the opening ceremonies. Gorkom
The organization of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was based on the principles of democratic centralism. The governing body of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) was the Party Congress, which initially met annually but whose meetings became less frequent, particularly under Joseph Stalin (dominant from the late 1920s to 1953). Party Congresses would elect a Central Committee which, in turn, would elect a Politburo and a Secretariat. Under Stalin, the most powerful position in the party became the General Secretary, who was elected by the Politburo and Secretariat. In 1952 the title of ''General Secretary'' became ''First Secretary'' and the ''Politburo'' became the ''Presidium''; the names reverted to their former forms under Leonid Brezhnev in 1966. In theory, supreme power in the party was invested in the Party Congress. However, in practice the power structure became reversed and, particularly after the death of Lenin in January 1924, supreme power became t ...

Olympic Symbols
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) uses icons, flags and symbols to elevate the Olympic Games. These symbols include those commonly used during Olympic competition—such as the flame, fanfare and theme—as well as those used throughout the years, such as the Olympic flag. The Olympic flag was created in 1913 under the guidance of Baron de Coubertin of France. It was first hoisted in Alexandria, Egypt, at the 1914 Pan-Egyptian Games. The five rings on the flag represent the inhabited continents of the world (the Americas were considered as one continent and Europe was treated as distinct from Asia). It was made to contain the colours (blue, black, red, yellow, and green) which are common to almost all flags around the world. Motto and creed The traditional Olympic motto is the hendiatris ''Citius, Altius, Fortius'' which is Latin for "Swifter, Higher, Stronger".
