Sheffield City Council
Sheffield City Council is the city council for the metropolitan borough of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It consists of 84 councillors, elected to represent 28 wards, each with three councillors. It is currently under No Overall Control, with Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party each holding chair positions in a proportionate number of committees, with Labour chairing four Committees, the Liberal Democrats chairing three and the Greens chairing two. History The council was founded as the Corporation of Sheffield in 1843, when Sheffield was incorporated (see History of Sheffield). In 1889, it attained county borough status and in 1893 city status. The party fielded one candidate in Warrington at the 1979 general election, who received only 144 votes and came bottom of the poll. Kean stood again, at the 1980 Glasgow Central by-election, winning only ten votes – one of the lowest totals polled in a British by-election since 1918. The following year, a group of high-profile Labour Party figures formed a new Social Democratic Party, gaining far more attention than Kean's group. He hoped to force the new party to change their name. By coincidence, a by-election arose in Warrington, in 1981, and Kean stood against the new party with the slogan "Enforce Law, End Poverty, Create Jobs". Bill Michie
William Michie (24 November 1935 – 22 September 2017) was a British politician. He was Labour Member of Parliament for Sheffield Heeley from 1983 to 2001, when he stood down. He was a member of the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs and of the Parliamentary Humanist Group. After his death the BBC described him as "a stalwart of Sheffield politics". Early life Michie was born in Sheffield to Arthur Michie, a turner, and his wife Violet. He was educated at the city's Abbeydale secondary school and Sheffield Polytechnic. Clive James Charles Betts (born 13 January 1950) is a British Labour Party politician and former economist, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Attercliffe from 1992 to 2010 and is the current MP for the successor seat of Sheffield South East. Early life Betts was born on 13 January 1950 in Sheffield. Roger Barton (politician)
Roger Barton (born 6 January 1945) is a British engineer and politician who served for ten years as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). He was a leading member of the Labour Party in Sheffield and served on the City Council. After losing his seat in the European Parliament, he set up an organisation that offers llama trekking to young people in the city. Helen Margaret Jackson CBE (née Price, born 19 May 1939) is a British former Labour politician. Early life She attended the independent Berkhamsted School for Girls and read Modern History at St Hilda's College, Oxford, graduating from Oxford University in 1960, and then the C.F. Mott College of Education (which later became part of Liverpool Polytechnic), gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1972. Between 1960 and 1961, she worked as assistant librarian at the Queen's College, Oxford. From 1961 to 1962, Jackson was an assistant teacher in Stoke on Trent. Alan Roy Billings (born 7 October 1942) is an Anglican priest and Labour politician who is currently the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Early life and education Billings was born into a working-class family in Leicester in 1942. His father, Paul Billings, worked at Imperial Typewriters and his mother, Dorothy (), at Byfords Hosiery. He was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys, Leicester. He went on to study Theology and Philosophy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1962-5), receiving a BA degree.
