The 1980 Railway Cup Hurling Championship was the 54th series of the Railway Cup, an annual hurling tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The tournament took place between 17 February and 17 March 1980. The championship was won by Connacht who secured the title following a 1-5 to 0-7 defeat of Munster in the final. This was their 2nd Railway Cup title, their first since 1947. Leinster were the defending champions, however, they were defeated at the semi-final stage. 1947 Railway Cup Hurling Championship
The 1947 Railway Cup Hurling Championship was the 21st series of the inter-provincial hurling Railway Cup. Three matches were played between 9 March and 6 April 1947. It was contested by Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster. Munster entered the championship as the defending champions. On 6 April 1947, Connacht won the Railway Cup after a 2-05 to 1-01 defeat of Munster in the final at Croke Park, Dublin. This was their first ever title. Munster's Jerry O'Riordan was the Railway Cup top scorer with 4-00. John Callinan
John Callinan (born 1955) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with the Clare senior inter-county teamhttp://www.sligoweekender.ie/news/story/?trs=cwqlojqlkf from 1973 until 1987. Early life John Callinan was born in Clarecastle, County Clare in 1955 into a family of one brother and four sisters. He was educated locally and would later become one of Clare’s greatest-ever hurling players. He attended University College Dublin (UCD) where he also played on the University's Hurling Team. He graduated as a Lawyer and currently practices in Ennis, County Clare. Playing career Club Callinan played his club hurling with his local Clarecastle club. He won senior county championship titles in 1986 and 1987. Inter-county Callinan played hurling with the Clare minor team in the early 1970s before making his senior debut in 1973. John Connolly (hurler)
John Connolly (born 14 June 1948) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a full-forward for the Galway senior team. Born in Leitir Móir, County Galway, Connolly first played competitive hurling whilst at school in St. Mary's College, Galway. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 1967 championship. Connolly went on to play a key role for Galway for more than a decade, and won one All-Ireland medal and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team at various times, Connolly won one Railway Cup medal in 1980. At club level he is a one-time All-Ireland medallist with Castlegar. In addition to this he also won four Connacht medals and six championship medals. Croke Park ( ga, Páirc an Chrócaigh, ) is a Gaelic games stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Named after Archbishop Thomas Croke, it is referred to as Croker by GAA fans and locals. 1979 Railway Cup Hurling Championship
The 1979 Railway Cup Hurling Championship was the 53rd staging of the Railway Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1927. The cup began on 11 March 1979 and ended on 1 April 1979. Munster were the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Connacht in the semi-final. On 1 April 1979, Leinster won the cup following a 1-13 to 1-09 defeat of Connacht in the final. This was their 18th Railway Cup title overall and their first title since 1977. The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling).
