1980 NBL Season
The 1980 NBL season was the 2nd season of the National Basketball League (NBL). Off-Season Changes *Glenelg Tigers folded. *Coburg Giants, West Torrens Eagles and Launceston Casino City Tigers joined. *David Claxton replaced Robert Young as Head Coach of Brisbane Bullets. *Adrian Hurley replaced Joe Farrugia as Head Coach of Illawarra Hawks. *Dean Donnollon replaced Bob Turner as Head Coach of Newcastle Falcons. Auchenflower Stadium
Auchenflower Stadium (currently known under naming rights as NAB Stadium) is an Australian basketball centre in Auchenflower, Queensland. The eight-court arena was the home of NBL side Brisbane Bullets until 1983. During that time, it was often referred to as The Auchendome. The facilities cater for those using wheelchairs. During the 2010–11 Queensland floods, nine feet of water flooded the complex. It also hosted the 2014 NBL Blitz during the pre-season of the 2014–15 NBL season, which saw the Townsville Crocodiles win the pre-season championship. NBL Coach Of The Year Award
The National Basketball League Coach of the Year is an annual National Basketball League (NBL) award given since the 1980 NBL season to the best head coach of the regular season. At the season's end, each club's Head Coach, one Assistant Coach and the Team Captain vote on the Coach of the Year in a 3-2-1 format (3 votes being indicative of the most deserving). Voters are not allowed to vote for the coach of their own team. The winner receives the Lindsay Gaze Trophy, which is named in honour of legendary NBL coach and Basketball Hall of Famer Lindsay Gaze, who guided the Melbourne Tigers to two NBL Championships over a long and celebrated career. In 2015–16, Townsville Crocodiles head coach Shawn Dennis became the first coach in NBL history to be named Coach of the Year with the combination of a losing record and without qualifying for the Finals. Ray Wood (basketball)
Raymond Ernest Wood (11 June 1931 – 7 July 2002) was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Representing Manchester United, he played in the 1956 and 1957 Football League championship-winning teams. Known for his pace and agility, Wood had the opportunity to be a professional sprinter, but opted instead to play football. He played for England at international level on three occasions between 1954 and 1956 and, after retiring from playing in 1968, managed football clubs in the US, Cyprus, Greece, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. Playing career Wood started his career as an amateur with Newcastle United, though he failed to make a first team appearance and moved to Darlington in 1949. NBL Most Valuable Player Award
The National Basketball League Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) is an annual National Basketball League (NBL) award given since the league's inaugural season to the best performing player of the regular season. Throughout the year, coaching staff from each team vote on the best performing players in every game, using a 5-4-3-2-1 system at the completion of each match. The votes are collated and the individual with the most votes at the end of the regular season is awarded the Most Valuable Player. The winner receives the Andrew Gaze Trophy, which is named in honour of Australian basketball legend Andrew Gaze, a seven-time winner of the NBL MVP award. Jim Slacke
Jim Slacke (born ) is an American former professional basketball player who played seven seasons in the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) for the Illawarra Hawks. After playing college basketball for the Chico State Wildcats in 1972–73, Slacke moved to Australia where he joined the Illawarra Hawks and played in the New South Wales Men's Division 1 basketball competition. The Hawks were preseason favourites for the 1977 Championship behind Slacke and Gordie McLeod. In 1979, the Hawks were founding members of the Australian NBL. Slacke was part of the inaugural team and averaged a career-best 23.8 points per game in his first season. In seven seasons with the Hawks, he played 143 games and averaged 17.5 points per game. In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points by shooting from behind the free-throw line (informally known as the foul line or the charity stripe), a line situated at the end of the Key (basketball), restricted area. Points in basketball are used to keep track of the score in a game. Points can be accumulated by making field goals (two or three points) or free throws (one point). If a player makes a field goal from within the three-point line, the player scores two points. If the player makes a field goal from beyond the three-point line, the player scores three points. Beaton Park Stadium is an Australian basketball centre in Gwynneville, New South Wales. It was the home of National Basketball League side Illawarra Hawks between 1979 and 1998, and is the home to local basketball in Wollongong. It was nicknamed "The Snake Pit" during its time with the Illawarra/Wollongong Hawks.
