The 1980 Lamar Cardinals football team represented Lamar University as a member of the Southland Conference during the 1980 NCAA Division I-A football season. Southland Conference
The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Chris Grant became the Southland's seventh commissioner on April 5, 2022. From 1996 to 2002, for football only, the Southland Conference was known as the Southland Football League. Ruston is a small city and the parish seat of Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is the largest city in the Eastern Ark-La-Tex region. The 1980 McNeese State Cowboys football team was an American football team that represented McNeese State University as a member of the Southland Conference during the 1980 NCAA Division I-A football season. In its second season under head coach Ernie Duplechin, the team compiled an overall record of 10–2 record with a mark of 5–0 against conference opponents, won the Southland championship, and outscored opponents by a total of 318 to 154. The team played its home games in Cowboy Stadium in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The team concluded an undefeated season against SLC opponents and clinched the conference championship with a 14–0 shutout victory over Southwestern Louisiana on November 22, 1980. The Sabine Shoe is the name of the bronze shoe trophy that was awarded to the winner of the annual college football game between the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (formerly the Southwestern Louisiana Bulldogs) of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly the University of Southwestern Louisiana) in Lafayette, Louisiana and the Lamar Cardinals of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. The Sabine Shoe trophy was first awarded in 1968 by the University of Southwestern Louisiana's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. The name of the bronze rivalry trophy was derived from the Sabine River that forms part of the Texas–Louisiana border. USL defeated Lamar in the 1978 edition of the rivalry game, but the Ragin' Cajuns were not awarded the trophy as it had vanished.
