Singapore Idol
''Singapore Idol'' is a reality television singing competition created by Simon Fuller and produced by MediaCorp Studios and FremantleMedia Operations BV. It began airing on MediaCorp Channel 5 on 9 August 2004, as an addition to the Idol franchise based on the UK show Pop Idol, and became one of the most popular shows in the history of Singaporean television. The concept of the series is to find new solo recording artists where the winner is determined by the viewers. Through telephone and SMS text voting, viewers have chosen as winners Taufik Batisah, Hady Mirza and Sezairi Sezali. The series employs a panel of judges who critique the contestants' performances. The original four judges during season 1 were singer/songwriter Dick Lee, Florence Lian, record producer Ken Lim and singer Douglas Oliverio. Chua Jim Neo
Chua Jim Neo (; 1905 – 8 August 1980) was a Singaporean chef and cookbook writer best known for ''Mrs. Lee's Cookbook'', which preserves the recipes of Peranakan cuisine. Chua was also the mother of Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister of Singapore. Biography Chua was born in Singapore in 1905 to Chua Kim Teng, a wealthy local businessman, and Leong Ah Soon, a Chinese Indonesian of Hakka descent. While her father was born in Singapore, her paternal grandfather came from a Hokkien Peranakan family in Malacca with ancestry from Haicheng, Zhangzhou, Fujian. Her parents arranged a marriage for her to a storekeeper, named Lee Chin Koon, and they married when she was fifteen. Chua had five children and her oldest son was Lee Kuan Yew, who went on to become the first Prime Minister of Singapore. Elvin Ng
Elvin Ng Choon Siong (; born 23 December 1980) is a Singaporean actor and former model. Early life Ng attended Jurong Primary School, Catholic High School and National Junior College. He graduated with an honours degree in English literature from the National University of Singapore. Career Ng was discovered through a talent search programme ''School Belle and the Beau'' hosted by MediaCorp DJ and Host, Dennis Chew and Belinda Lee, during his university days. Stella Huang (), born 17 December 1980, is a singer, actress and former businesswoman. Ng Yi Sheng (; born 1980) is a Singaporean gay writer. He has published a collection of his poems entitled ''last boy'', which won the Singapore Literature Prize, and a documentary book on gay, lesbian and bisexual Singaporeans called ''SQ21: Singapore Queers in the 21st Century'' in 2006. Early life and education Ng lived in Hong Kong with his parents for three years during his childhood. On his return to Singapore, he attended the Anglo-Chinese School. Alvin Tan Sheng Hui ( zh, s=陈圣辉, p=Chén Shènghuì; born 1980) is a Singaporean politician who has been serving as Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth concurrently since 2020. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Moulmein–Cairnhill division of Tanjong Pagar GRC since 2020. Hady Mirza
Muhammad Mirzahady Bin Amir, also known as Hady Mirza ( ms, حدي ميرزا; born 28 January 1980) is a Singaporean singer. He was the winner of the second season of the reality TV show ''Singapore Idol''. He was crowned the winner on 25 September 2006 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium after garnering 70% of about one million votes cast by television viewers. He was also the winner of the world's first ''Asian Idol'' competition held on 16 December 2007 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Asian Idol is a competition between six ''Idol'' winners from several different Asian countries, namely Singapore Idol, Malaysian Idol, Indonesian Idol, Indian Idol, Philippine Idol and Vietnam Idol. Benjamin Henry Sheares
Benjamin Henry Sheares (12 August 1907 – 12 May 1981) was a Singaporean politician, physician and academic who served as the second president of Singapore from 1971 until his death in 1981. Sheares retired in 1960 and was in private practice before being elected as the president of Singapore by the Parliament after the death of Yusof Ishak, the former president of the Republic, on 23 November 1970. He was sworn on 2 January 1971. Sheares initially wanted to retire after finishing his second term as he felt that he did not have the energy for another term, but Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew persuaded him and Sheares took on his third term. He served as the president of Singapore for three terms from 2 January 1971 until his death on 12 May 1981.
