The 1980 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Paris, France, at the Hippodrome de Longchamp on March 9, 1980. A report on the event was given in the Evening Times. IAAF
World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation (from 1912 to 2001) and International Association of Athletics Federations (from 2001 to 2019, both abbreviated as the IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running. Léon Schots
Léon Schots (born 11 June 1952) is a Belgian former long-distance runner who competed in track and cross country running competitions. His greatest achievement was a gold medal at the 1977 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he also led Belgium to the team title. He was an eleven time national champion, with victories from 1500 metres to 10,000 metres on the track in addition to three Belgian cross country titles. He twice represented Belgium at the European Athletics Championships (1974 and 1978). He also placed fourth at the 1980 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, sharing in the team bronze, and was a three-time champion at the World Military Cross Country Championships. Stephen ("Steve") Kenyon (born 16 September 1951) is a retired male long-distance runner from England, who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the men's marathon (sport), marathon and half marathon. He set his personal best of 2:11:40 over the classic distance on 13 June 1982 in Gateshead. He is a life member of both Bolton United Harriers & Salford Harriers. Barry Smith (born 16 April 1953 in London) is a British former long-distance runner. He competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics. He was a frequent part of the English team at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. After a junior team medal at the 1972 International Cross Country Championships and 1973 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, he broke through as a senior in 1977 by sharing in the team silver medals. Karel Lismont (; born 8 March 1949) is a former Belgian long-distance runner. He competed at the 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 Olympics in the marathon and 10,000 m events. He won two marathon medals: a silver in 1972 and a bronze in 1976, finishing ninth and twenty-fourth in 1980 and 1984, respectively; he was less successful in the 10,000 m, finishing eleventh in 1976 and failing to reach the final in 1972. Stephen Henry Jones (born 4 August 1955) is a Welsh athlete and set the former world record in the marathon, in his first completed race at that distance at the Chicago Marathon in 1984 with 2:08:05. Biography Jones grew up in Ebbw Vale, Wales and ran his first race at the age of 15 as a member of the Air Training Corps. Dissatisfied with working in a factory as a sewing-machine mechanic, he became an aircraft technician for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1974, and joined the RAF's running team in 1976.
