1980 Evening News Trophy
The Evening News Trophy, was the second round of the 1980 Aurora AFX F1 Championship, at Brands Hatch, the race held on 7 April 1980 (Easter Monday). The race is notable for the victory of Desiré Wilson, who became the first female driver to win a Formula One race. Report Entry A meagre total of 10 cars were entered for the event, the second race of the series of the 1980 Easter holidays. Race The race was held over 40 laps of Brands Hatch's Grand Prix circuit, a distance of 104.56 miles. A small piece of history was carved out, when Desiré Wilson became the first woman to win a F1 race, a feat which she achieved in remarkable style. At the wheel of her Theodore Racing with Hi-Line Wolf WR4, she simply trounced the opposition, leading from start to finish and extending her advantage of over 15 seconds at the end of the race. Anthony Gordon Dean (23 July 1932 – 17 January 2008) was a British racing driver from England who competed in sports car racing, touring car racing, the Can-Am series and various single seat formulae, including non-championship Formula One, in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. He is known for winning a round of the Can-Am championship in 1970 as a privateer entrant. Racing career Early career Dean began his career in kart racing, before moving into club-racing in 1963, after the motor-dealership he worked for acquired a Lotus Eleven. In his first race, at Rufforth, he qualified in pole position and finished second. British Formula One Championship
The British Formula One Championship, often abbreviated to British F1, was a Formula One motor racing championship held in the United Kingdom. It was often referred to as the Aurora AFX Formula One series due to the Aurora company's sponsorship of the series for three of the four seasons. The long established Cosworth DFV engine helped make the series possible between 1978 and 1980. As in the South African Formula One Championship a decade or so before, second hand cars from manufacturers like Lotus and Fittipaldi Automotive were run by many entrants, although some, such as the March 781, were built specifically for the series. Arrows A1
The Arrows A1 was the car with which Arrows Grand Prix International competed in the and Formula One seasons. It replaced the Arrows FA1, which was banned by the London High Court on 31 July 1978 after a legal protest from the Shadow team on the grounds that it was a carbon-copy of the Shadow DN9. Arrows anticipated that they would lose against Shadow and designed and built the A1 in under 60 days whilst the court case was being heard. Hence Arrows were able to present the Arrows A1 to the press just three days after the court case ended and did not miss any races. Given that the FA1 was a carbon-copy of the Shadow DN9, the A1 is the essentially first true F1 car designed and built by Arrows Grand Prix International. Arrows Grand Prix International was a British Formula One team active from to . It was known as Footwork from 1991 to 1996. Origins The Arrows Grand Prix International team was founded in Milton Keynes, England in November 1977, by Italian businessman Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, former racing driver Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate (the team deriving its name from the initials of their surnames) when they left the Shadow team. The team was formed and appeared on the grid for their first race at the 1978 Brazilian Grand Prix, all within three months. The Williams FW06 was the first car produced by the combination of Frank Williams (Formula One), Frank Williams and Patrick Head for their Williams Grand Prix Engineering Formula One team. As was the standard arrangement for the many small British ''garagiste'' teams, the car was powered by the Cosworth DFV 3.0 litre V8 engine. Concept After a season running a customer March Engineering, March chassis in 1977 with limited results, just as in 1975 Frank Williams decided on a completely independent car for the new season. The FW06 was Patrick Head's first full F1 design. Williams Grand Prix Engineering Limited, currently racing in Formula One as Williams Racing, is a British Formula One motor racing team and constructor. It was founded by former team owner Frank Williams and automotive engineer Patrick Head. RAM Racing
RAM Racing was a Formula One racing team which competed during the racing seasons of 1976 to 1985. The team entered other manufacturers' chassis from 1976 to 1980, then ran March's team from 1981 to 1983, only entering a car entirely their own in 1984 and 1985. The team was formed in 1975 by Mike Ralph and John Macdonald, with RAM derived from their names. After running Macdonald in a GRD in British Formula Three, they entered Alan Jones in a Formula 5000 March for 1976.
