1980 Birthday Honours
The Queen's Birthday Honours 1980 were appointments in many of the Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of the Queen. They were published on 13 June 1980 for the United Kingdom and Colonies, Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, Fiji, Bahamas, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Commonwealth Realm
A Commonwealth realm is a sovereign state in the Commonwealth of Nations whose monarch and head of state is shared among the other realms. Each realm functions as an independent state, equal with the other realms and nations of the Commonwealth. King Charles III succeeded his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, as monarch of each Commonwealth realm following her death on 8 September 2022. He simultaneously became Head of the Commonwealth. there are 15 Commonwealth realms: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and the United Kingdom. Arthur Antony Duff
Sir Arthur Antony Duff (25 February 1920 – 13 August 2000) was a senior British diplomat and Director General of MI5. Early life and naval service Born in 1920 to Admiral Sir Arthur Allen Morison Duff KCB and Margaret Grace Dawson at Var Trees House, Moreton. Educated at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Duff started his career in the Royal Navy where he was a submarine commander during the Second World War; he briefly commanded and in 1942 before commanding from December 1942 to July 1944. Diplomatic career After the war Duff joined the Diplomatic Service in January 1946. Hugh Fraser (British Politician)
Sir Hugh Charles Patrick Joseph Fraser (23 January 1918 – 6 March 1984) was a British Conservative Party politician and first husband of Lady Antonia Fraser. Youth and military career Fraser was the second son of the 14th Lord Lovat and a prominent Roman Catholic. He was educated at Ampleforth College and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was President of the Oxford Union. He also attended the Sorbonne. He was commissioned into the Lovat Scouts in 1936 and served throughout World War II. During the war, Fraser served in GHQ Liaison Regiment. Philip Dowson
Sir Philip Henry Manning Dowson (16 August 1924 – 22 August 2014) was a leading British architect. He served as President of the Royal Academy from 1993 to 1999. Early life Philip Dowson was born in South Africa. Having moved to England, he was educated at Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, from 1938 to 1942 and then went up to University College, Oxford (where he later designed four student accommodation blocks for Stavertonia in North Oxford), to read Mathematics. This was during the Second World War. After one year in Oxford, he joined the Royal Navy and remained in the service until 1947. On leaving the Navy, Dowson proceeded to Clare College, Cambridge, to study Art from 1947 to 1950, and then to the Architectural Association School in London. James Crane (police Officer)
Sir James William Donald Crane (1 January 1921 – 29 November 1994) was a British police officer who served as HM Inspector of Constabulary from 1976 to 1979; and HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary for England and Wales 1979–82. After wartime service with the Royal Hampshire Regiment, he joined the Metropolitan Police in 1946. By the early 1970s he was the Commander of the Fraud Squad . He was promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissioner and it was in this role that on 19 July 1972 he began the Poulson investigation. At the time this was the UK's biggest ever corruption inquiry: it eventually led to the resignation of Reginald Maudling, then Home Secretary and notionally in charge of the police. Albert Costain
Sir Albert Costain (5 July 1910 – 5 March 1987) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was Member of Parliament for Folkestone and Hythe from 1959 to 1983, preceding future Conservative leader Michael Howard. Early career Costain was educated at King James's School, Knaresborough and the College of Estate Management. He became production director on the formation of Richard Costain Ltd in 1933 and was later chairman of the company. Sir Frederick Frank Arthur Burden (27 December 1905 – 6 July 1987) was a British Conservative politician. Early livvvve Burden was educated at the Sloane School, Chelsea and was British schools boxing champion 1921–22. He served with the Royal Air Force in World War II, first with a Polish unit then with Eastern Air Command, and later on the staff of Lord Louis Mountbatten at South East Asia Command, attaining the rank of Squadron Leader.
