The 197th Field Artillery Regiment is a regiment in the New Hampshire Army National Guard. History B Battery claims to have been formed before 1780 as 1st Company, Light Infantry, 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, New Hampshire Militia. C Battery traces its history to Captain Waldron’s Minute Company, 2nd New Hampshire Regiment, which was organized on July 3, 1775, making C Battery one of several National Guard units with colonial roots. New Hampshire Army National Guard
The New Hampshire Army National Guard is a federal military reserve force of the Army National Guard of the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Along with the New Hampshire Air National Guard, it is an element of the New Hampshire National Guard. As a state militia, units in the New Hampshire Army National Guard are not in the normal United States Army chain of command. They are under the jurisdiction of the Governor of New Hampshire through the office of the state adjutant general unless they are federalized by order of the President of the United States. The Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS), was the method of assigning unit designations to units of some of the combat arms branches of the United States Army, including Infantry, Special Forces, Field Artillery, and Armor, from 1957 to 1981.
