The 1979 Premier League was the third season of the National Soccer League, the former top Australian professional league for association football clubs since its establishment in 1977. St George FC
St George FC, commonly called Saints or Budapest, is a semi-professional Australian soccer club based in the St George district in the south of Sydney. The club was founded by Hungarian immigrants in 1957 as Budapest Club and by 1965 was renamed to St. George-Budapest Club. One of the top clubs of Australia from the 1960s to the 1980s, St George currently competes in the third-highest tier of Australian soccer, the NSW League One. Their former home ground was the St George Stadium, but due to its dilapidated state, St George has played its youth and senior fixtures at Ilinden Sports Centre since 2018. Chris Bambridge
Christopher Francis Bambridge (born 7 October 1947) is an Australian retired football referee. Born in Kettering, England he came to Australia from Britain in 1974. A Grade One referee, Bambridge was appointed to the national league in 1977, where he stayed until his retirement in 1991. He was awarded the FIFA badge in 1981, gaining selection to the panel of linesmen for the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia that year. Following his appointment as linesman for the quarter finals, semi-finals and final of the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship. Bambridge refereed the final of the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship in China. He was also selected for and officiated at the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico and the 1988 Summer Olympic games in South Korea, becoming the only Australian referee to have taken part in both World Cup and Olympic Games finals. Marconi Stadium
Marconi Stadium is a soccer stadium in Sydney, Australia. It is the home ground for Marconi Stallions, as well as regularly hosting matches for the Western Sydney Wanderers FC National Youth League and W-League teams. Marconi Stallions Although a soccer pitch had existed on the site since the start of the soccer club in the 1960s, Marconi Stadium itself was built in 1972 with a capacity of 11,500 and used for Marconi Stallions matches within the NSW State League soccer pyramid. In 1977 the team joined the newly formed NSL and played in that competition until it ended in 2004 and the team re-joined the NSW State system. Gary Cole (soccer)
Gary Cole (born 5 February 1956) is an Australian football (soccer) player, who played for the Australia national football team 40 times and scored 20 goals between 1975 and 1984. He was most recently the Football director for A-League club Sydney FC, made redundant in December 2012. Playing career Transferred from Ringwood Wilhelmina to Fitzroy Alexander (later called Heidelberg United) in 1976 for a transfer fee of 6,000 after three years at Ringwood. Cole became one of the early stars of the National Soccer League as a striker, scoring 88 goals in six seasons at Heidelberg. In 1984, Cole moved to rival NSL club Preston Lions FC after injuring his ankle badly in 1983, and went on to score 21 goals for the club before retiring in 1986. On 14 August 1981, he scored seven goals against Fiji, and set an Australian record for the most goals scored in an international match. Tony Henderson
Anthony Joseph Henderson (born 14 January 1954 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England) is a former association footballer who captained Australia five times in the early 1980s. Playing career Club career Henderson played youth football at Blackpool before signing for Rotherham United where he made six league appearances between 1970 and 1974. In 1975 moved to South Africa where he turned out for Durban United before moving during the 1975 season to East London. He played at East London until the end of the 1976 season. Perry Park, Brisbane
Perry Park is a 5,000-capacity sporting ground located in the Brisbane suburb of Bowen Hills. Perry Park is home to the Brisbane Strikers, which plays in the National Premier Leagues Queensland. Perry Park is owned by Brisbane City Council, and managed by the YMCA, who run facilities in the complex. Brisbane Strikers hold a sub-lease from the YMCA. Bobby Campbell (Northern Irish Footballer)
Robert McFaul Campbell (13 September 1956 – 15 November 2016) was a Northern Irish international footballer who played as a centre forward. Club career Born in Belfast, Campbell started his career at Aston Villa, making his professional debut in April 1974. He failed to establish himself in the first team, making 10 league appearances for the club before being sold to Huddersfield Town in May 1975. He joined Sheffield United in 1977, but left the club after just one season. He briefly returned to Huddersfield Town for a second spell before signing for Halifax Town.
