1979 Chatham Cup
The 1979 Chatham Cup was the 52nd annual nationwide knockout football competition in New Zealand. Early stages of the competition were run in three regions (northern, central, and southern), with the National League teams receiving a bye until the Fourth Roundof the competition. In all, 131 teams took part in the competition. Note: Different sources give different numberings for the rounds of the competition: some start round one with the beginning of the regional qualifications; others start numbering from the first national knock-out stage. The former numbering scheme is used in this article. The 1979 final The final was the second all-Auckland final clash, the first having been between the same teams (but with a different winner) in 1973. Ian Ormond
John Lambie "Ian" Ormond (5 August 1949 – 8 October 2021) was an association football player who represented New Zealand at international level. Biography Ormond was born in Harthill, Scotland, on 5 August 1949, and migrated with his family to New Zealand in 1961. He became a naturalised New Zealand citizen in 1975. Ormond scored a hat-trick on his full All Whites debut in a 4–1 win over New Caledonia on 17 September 1971 and ended his international playing career with ten A-international caps and five goals to his credit, his final cap an appearance in a 1–0 loss to Australia on 2 March 1976. Karori Swifts
Waterside Karori AFC is an association football club in Karori, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. They currently play in the Capital Football (New Zealand), Capital Football Central League (New Zealand), Central League. History Waterside Karori was formed in 1987 when Karori Swifts merged with Waterside. These two clubs had contrasting origins: Swifts were founded in 1894 from a Sunday School, and Waterside were founded in 1921 by dock workers. The current Waterside Karori club is still nicknamed Wharfies. Waterside were originally based at Kaiwharawhara at Wellington's waterfront, a location still used by Waterside Karori. Masterton (soccer)
Wairarapa United is a football club based in Masterton, New Zealand and are currently competing in the Central League. Club history The club was formed by the merger of Masterton and Carterton in 1996. The club has competed in the Central League since 2009. In Wairarapa's first season in the Central League, the club finished sixth in the league. Wairarapa's highest finish in the league is third place which they placed in both 2010 and 2011. The club defeated four-time champions Napier Rovers 2–1 to win the Chatham Cup in 2011. This was Wairarapa's first time appearing in the final of the Chatham Cup. After the match, long serving coach Phil Keinzley stepped down from the role of coaching Wairarapa; only to latter continue the role. Christchurch Technical
Cashmere Technical is an association football club based in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was formed in early 2012 from the merger of two of the city's premier teams, Cashmere Wanderers and Woolston Technical. The two clubs had agreed to work together in early 2011, and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake which devastated their home city and resulted in the loss of many playing facilities hastened their merger into a combined side. Cashmere Technical play in the Mainland Premier League, and have won the Chatham Cup twice as Cashmere but also once as Christchurch Technical Old Boys. Halswell United
Halswell United is an amateur association football club based in Christchurch, New Zealand in the suburb of Halswell. They will compete in the New World Mainland Premier League. The club was founded in 1964 as Halswell United Soccer, changing its name in 1999 when the national body officially changed its title to include the word football, and it is one of the largest clubs in the South Island, with over 900 members. History The club was formed in March and April 1964, with meetings at the Halswell Scouts Hall, which were on the site now occupied by the club's rooms. Initial teams were age-group teams (under-9 and under-13 boys). A senior team was soon added. By the second season, the club were granted the right to use Halswell Domain as its home ground. Whanganui Athletic FC are an association football team based in the New Zealand North Island city of Whanganui. They are traditionally the strongest team from the city, and played in the top flight of New Zealand football in both league and cup competitions. The team was founded in 1929 as Wanganui East Athletic, but briefly changed their name to Wanganui FC between 1974 and 1976 before reverting to their original name before dropping the East to just become Wanganui Athletic, changing to Whanganui Athletic when their home city was officially re-named. East Coast Bays (soccer)
East Coast Bays is a football club located on Auckland's North Shore. The club has won the Chatham Cup and the NRFL Premier Division three times. History East Coast Bays were founded following a public meeting held at the Progressive Hall (since demolished and replaced by the Bays Club) in October 1958. The committee formed from this meeting entered four junior teams for the start of the 1959 season. As some of the committee members were supporters of Glasgow Rangers, the colours of Royal Blue shirts, white shorts, and royal Blue sox were adopted. East Coast Bays picked The Maxwell Farm as its ground with the pitch running north to south. The old Progress Hall on the site was adapted to serve as clubrooms.
