The 1978–79 Yorkshire Cup was the seventy-first occasion on which the Yorkshire Cup competition had been held. Bradford Northern won the trophy by beating York by the score of 18-8 The match was played at Headingley, Leeds, now in West Yorkshire. The attendance was 10,429 and receipts were £9,188 Background This season there were no junior/amateur clubs taking part, no new entrants and no "leavers" and so the total of entries remained the same at sixteen. This in turn resulted in no byes in the first round. Bradford Bulls
The Bradford Bulls are a professional rugby league club in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, playing in the Championship. They have won five Challenge Cups, six league championships and three World Club Challenges. The team jersey is predominantly white with red, amber and black chevrons. In 1907, Bradford F.C., founder member of the Rugby Football League, switched codes to association football and Bradford Northern, often abbreviated to Northern, was formed by members who wished to continue rugby. Bradford Northern were renamed Bradford Bulls in 1996, at the start of Super League. Bradford's main rivalries are with Leeds, Halifax and Huddersfield. Keighley Cougars
The Keighley Cougars are a professional rugby league club from Keighley in West Yorkshire, England who compete in League 1, the third tier of English rugby league. Keighley's home ground, Cougar Park has a capacity of 7,800. History Early years The club was formed at a meeting held on 17 October 1876 under the presidency of the Reverend Marriner. A committee was elected and the club was allowed the use of Holmes' field in Lawkholme Lane. The first kick-off took place on Saturday afternoon, 21 October and the committee met again on 24 October and decided to adopt Association and Rugby football laws. On 18 November 1876, the first game took place at Lawkholme Lane. The visitors were Crosshills and although the game ended in a draw, there are records, which say, "the draw was in the visitors' favour". Terry Morgan (rugby League)
Sir Terence Keith Morgan (born 28 December 1948) is a British engineer. Early life Terry Morgan was born in 1948. His early education was at Croesycelliog Secondary Modern School. He studied for an HND at Newport and Monmouthshire College of Technology. Morgan graduated from Birmingham University with an MSc degree in Engineering Production and Management. Career Morgan became Chairman of Crossrail in 2009. Between 2002 and 2009 he was Chief Executive Officer of Tube Lines, the public–private partnership company that was responsible for the maintenance, renewal and upgrade of the infrastructure of three London Underground lines. Gary Smith (rugby League)
Gary Smith is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A Queensland State of Origin representative forward, he played club football in the Brisbane Rugby League for Brothers and in the New South Wales Rugby League for the North Sydney Bears. Playing career After playing junior football for Nanango, Smith made his senior debut at the age of 17 for the Caloundra club before playing in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for the Brothers club. Smith toured New Zealand with Queensland in 1987, playing in a match against the Kiwis. Smith was also selected to play for Queensland in the 1987 State of Origin series' first match. Thrum Hall
Thrum Hall was a rugby league stadium on Hanson Lane in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. It was the home of Halifax for 112 years. The site on which the ground stood is now occupied by a supermarket. History In 1878, Halifax, who had just won the inaugural Yorkshire Cup, bought a patch of land for £3,000 from a local farmer, Major Dyson, to develop as a new multi-purpose sports ground. It was to be a replacement for their Hanson Lane ground which stood opposite. The site measured 55,000 square yards and included a cricket pitch and bowling greens. The rugby stadium was opened on 18 September 1886 by Alderman Riley, who kicked off before the Halifax v Hull F.C. match. Forward Ernest Williamson scored the first try (his only try for Halifax) and the home side went on to win in front of a crowd of around 8,000. Hunslet () is an inner-city area in south Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is southeast of the city centre and has an industrial past. It is situated in the Hunslet and Riverside ward of Leeds City Council and Leeds Central parliamentary constituency. The population of the previous City and Hunslet council ward at the 2011 census was 33,705. Belle Vue, also known as the Be Well Support Stadium for sponsorship reasons, in Wakefield, England, is the home of Wakefield Trinity rugby league club. It is on the A638 Doncaster Road, a mile south of Wakefield city centre. History Early years Wakefield Trinity originally played on Heath Common. In 1875–76, they moved to a ground near the Borough Market (near the current Trinity shopping centre). They returned to the Belle Vue area of Wakefield played on a ground behind the Alexandra Hotel near Elm Street. This is on the opposite side of the road from the present ground. It remains unconfirmed when Wakefield Trinity moved to the present ground as Belle Vue is both an area of Wakefield and the name of the ground and people can confuse a mention of one for the other. Hull Kingston Rovers are a professional rugby league club based in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, that competes in the Super League, the top tier of British rugby league. Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, that plays in the Super League.
