1978–79 Vancouver Canucks Season
The 1978–79 Vancouver Canucks season was the team's ninth in the National Hockey League. Offseason The Canucks radically changed their appearance by changing the team's colors, logo and jersey. The blue and green scheme was replaced with gold, red and black. The logo of a stylized 'C' was replaced by a stylized ice skate in the new colors with the blade over top the name 'Canucks'. For the jersey, the logo was displayed on shoulder patches while the main body had the team's new colors arranged in a 'V' pattern, for Vancouver. The home jerseys were primarily yellow, a rarity at the time as most teams used white as the primary color for their home uniforms. Smythe Division
The NHL's Smythe Division was formed in 1974 as part of the Clarence Campbell Conference. The division existed for 19 seasons until 1993. It was named in honour of Conn Smythe, who was a longtime owner, general manager, and head coach in the league. It is the forerunner of the NHL's Northwest Division and Pacific Division. 1978–79 Philadelphia Flyers Season
The 1978–79 Philadelphia Flyers season was the Philadelphia Flyers' 12th season in the National Hockey League (NHL). Off-season Head coach Fred Shero, who had one more year left on his contract, submitted a letter of resignation on May 22, 1978, stating that the Flyers needed a change whether they realized it or not. Flyers management had previously heard rumors about Shero wanting to leave Philadelphia and re-join the New York Rangers organization, and refused to accept his letter of resignation. Shero then signed a $250,000, five-year contract with the Rangers to be their new head coach and general manager, believing he no longer had a contractual agreement to the Flyers. The 1978–79 New York Rangers season was the franchise's List of New York Rangers seasons, 53rd season. The highlight of the season was participating in the Stanley Cup Finals, as the Rangers played 12 consecutive playoff games without losing in regulation. Offseason The Rangers fired their general manager John Ferguson, Sr., John Ferguson and head coach Jean-Guy Talbot, replacing them with former Philadelphia Flyers and two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach Fred Shero.
