1978–79 National Basketball League Season
The 1978–79 Rotary Watches National Basketball League season was the seventh season of the National Basketball League. The league was sponsored by Rotary Watches and the number of teams participating increased to eleven. Doncaster completed the league and National Cup double, but Crystal Palace won the newly introduced Playoffs. Team changes Leicester switched back to Loughborough and Bedford dropped out of the league. Bracknell and Sunderland joined; the latter playing at the Crowtree Leisure Centre in the centre of Sunderland. It forms levels 2 to 4 on the British basketball pyramid, in line with the Scottish Basketball Championship, sitting directly below the top tier British Basketball League. Manchester Eagles, also Manchester United in the past, was a basketball team from Manchester, England. The club was bought out by Manchester United after settling down in Manchester following a series of relocations. The club had several mergers, creating a complicated overlapping history with Manchester Giants, the last of which ''de facto'' ended its existence in 1989 and reinstated the Giants. British Basketball League
The British Basketball League (BBL) is a men's professional basketball league in Great Britain and represents the highest level of play in the countries. The league is contested by 10 teams from England and Scotland. There are no clubs however from Wales or Northern Ireland. The BBL runs three additional knockout competitions alongside the BBL Championship which are the BBL Cup, the BBL Trophy and the end-of-season BBL Play-offs. The BBL sits above the National Basketball League and the Scottish Basketball Championship which effectively form the second tier of British basketball. There is currently no automatic promotion or relegation between the English and Scottish leagues and the BBL because of the franchise system in use in the BBL although several clubs have been successful in making the step up from the EBL in recent years. Basketball has a very long history in England, being introduced there by YMCA almost immediately after it was invented (having been created by the Canadian Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Massachusetts). World Wars I and II further spurred its popularity. The four highest profile team sports in the United Kingdom are football, cricket, rugby union and rugby league. Basketball belongs to the next tier alongside ice hockey and netball; like these sports, it has a significant and dedicated following, a professional league, but attracts little coverage from the major British media outlets and suffers from lack of "crossover" appeal. London Lions are a British professional basketball team based in Stratford, East London, England, and compete in the British Basketball League, the top tier of British basketball. Team Talbot, Guildford was an English basketball team competing in the National Basketball League (NBL) for three seasons between 1979 and 1982. Prior to this the team was simply known as Southern Pirates or Guildford Pirates. When the club moved to play the 1982 – 83 season in Bracknell the Pirates nickname resurfaced. (Bracknell is about 60 miles from the nearest coast.)
