1978 Virginia Slims Championships – Singles
Martina Navratilova defeated Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the final, 7–6, 6–4 to win the singles tennis title at the 1978 Virginia Slims Championships. It was her first Tour Finals singles title, and the first of an eventual record eight such titles. Chris Evert was the reigning champion, but did not qualify this year. Evonne Goolagong Cawley
Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley (née Goolagong; born 31 July 1951) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Goolagong was one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the age of 19, she won the French Open singles and the Australian Open doubles championships (the latter with Margaret Court). She won the women's singles tournament at Wimbledon in 1971. In 1980, she became the first mother to win Wimbledon for 66 years. Goolagong went on to win 14 Grand Slam tournament titles: seven in singles (four at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the French Open), six in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles. WTA Finals
The WTA Finals (formerly known as the WTA Tour Championships or WTA Championships) is a tournament of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) played annually at the end of the season. The event is uniquely reserved for players at the top of the WTA rankings. The format predates WTA and started in 1972 as the Championship tournament of WTA Tour's predecessor: the Virginia Slims Circuit. Since 2003 there have been eight singles players divided into two Round-robin tournament, round-robin groups, and eight doubles teams. The WTA Finals has the largest prize money and ranking points after the majors. The most successful player is Martina Navratilova with 8 singles and 13 doubles titles. Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954), known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. Evert won 18 major singles titles, including a record seven French Open titles and a joint-record six US Open titles (tied with Serena Williams). She was ranked world No. 1 for 260 weeks, and was the year-end world No. 1 singles player seven times (1974–78, 1980, 1981). Betty Stöve
Betty Flippina Stöve (born 24 June 1945) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. She is best remembered for reaching the ladies' singles final, the ladies' doubles final and the mixed doubles final during the same year at Wimbledon in 1977. She also won ten Grand Slam titles in women's doubles and mixed doubles. Career Stöve began playing tennis internationally in the mid-1960s. She made her Grand Slam debut at the 1964 Wimbledon. A virus, complicated by a malfunctioning thyroid gland, forced Stöve out of tennis for an 18-month period in the late 1960s. Despite being advised that she should never play tennis again, Stöve recovered to have her best years on the circuit. Sarah Virginia Wade (born 10 July 1945) is a British former professional tennis player. She won three Major tennis singles championships and four major doubles championships, and is the only British woman in history to have won titles at all four majors. She was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in singles, and No. 1 in the world in doubles. Wade was the most recent British tennis player to win a major singles tournament until Andy Murray won the 2012 US Open, and was the most recent British woman to have won a major singles title until Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open. Casals earned her reputation as a rebel in the tennis world when she began competing in the early 1960s. WTA Tour Championships Appearances
This article lists the appearances of all participants in the women's tennis singles WTA Finals since the tournament's inception in 1972. Since 2003, the tournament has pitted the top eight players on the WTA tour against each other in two groups in which they play three round-robin matches. Two players from each group advance to the semifinals, and the winners to the finals. Participants are listed in order of number of appearances. When there are more than eight players listed for any year since 2003, it is usually due to withdrawal by one or more players because of injury.
