1978 Texas Southern Tigers Football Team
The 1978 Texas Southern Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Texas Southern University as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) during the 1978 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Led by third-year head coach Wendell Mosley, the Tigers compiled an overall record of 3–7–1, with a mark of 1–4–1 in conference play, and finished sixth in the SWAC. They were outscored by a total of 214 to 131. Three Texas Southern players were selected to the first team of the District 8 all-star team: John McNeal; Alvin Whittington; and LeRoy Paul. The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports; in football, it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly referred to as Division I-AA. The SWAC is widely considered the premier HBCU conference and ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of alumni affiliated with professional sports teams, particularly in football.
