The 1978 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 24, 1978. The election was one of the closest on records, with the governing Liberals of Premier Alexander B. Campbell losing a number of seats to their Progressive Conservative rivals. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. John Elliot Williams
John Elliot Williams (September 5, 1920 – June 4, 1988) was a Canadian politician and boat builder. He represented 4th Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1978 to 1979 as a Progressive Conservative. Williams was born in 1920 in Beach Point, Prince Edward Island. He married Annie Giddings in 1940. Williams enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, to work as a shipwright. Following the war, he returned to Beach Point, and worked various jobs as a fisherman and carpenter before starting a career as a boat builder in the 1950s. Williams entered provincial politics in the 1978 election, defeating Liberal incumbent Gilbert Clements by 24 votes to become councillor for the electoral district of 4th Kings. Williams was defeated by Clements when he ran for re-election in 1979. Pat Binns
Patrick George Binns (born October 8, 1948), is a Canadian diplomat, the 30th premier of Prince Edward Island from 1996 to 2007 and Canadian Ambassador to Ireland from 2007 to 2010. Binns has a long history of public service, most notably being the 30th Premier of PEI for 11 years, during which time he was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island. During his premiership, Binns was known as the province's "affable and unassuming premier." He also served as Canada's Consul General in Boston, Massachusetts. Before the premiership Binns was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts. Born in Montague, Prince Edward Island, Campbell was a teacher by profession before entering politics in 1970 and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as a Liberal candidate. Leo Rossiter
Leo Francis Rossiter (January 15, 1923 – October 25, 1996) was a merchant, realtor and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1955 to 1981 as a Progressive Conservative. He was born in Morell, Prince Edward Island, the son of J. Edward Rossiter and Catherine Clarkin, and was educated at Saint Dunstan's University. Rossiter operated a general store and sold farm equipment. In 1946, he married Anna Pierce. He served in the province's Executive Council as Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Fisheries, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Provincial Secretary. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851.
