1978 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1978 New Zealand National Soccer League was the ninth season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. A change was made from previous years, with the replacement of goal average by goal difference as a means for ranking teams equal on points. Promotion and relegation Promotion was automatic, with the three lowest placed sides in the 1977 league ( New Brighton, Dunedin City, and Caversham) replaced by the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues (Courier Rangers, Waterside, and Woolston WMC respectively). Team performance The 1978 league saw a return of the traditional top-of-the-table rivalry between Trans Tours Christchurch United and Mount Wellington, with the Christchurch side narrowly finishing top. Keith Nelson (footballer)
Keith Robert Nelson (18 February 1947 – 29 January 2020) was an association football player who represented New Zealand at international level. Career Born in Renfrew, Scotland, his first club in semi-professional football was with his hometown club Renfrew, but he quickly moved onto Cambuslang Rangers where he was a prolific goalscorer, winning the Scottish Junior Cup on four occasions in 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1973 as well as winning four caps with the Scottish Junior International team, scoring in all four games against Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. He emigrated to New Zealand to join Hamilton AFC in 1974, and played a prominent role in the Waikato club's rise to the national league. He then continued to find the net with regularity at the highest level of domestic football. Nelson became a naturalised New Zealand citizen in December 1976. Waterside Karori AFC is an association football club in Karori, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. They currently play in the Capital Football (New Zealand), Capital Football Central League (New Zealand), Central League. History Waterside Karori was formed in 1987 when Karori Swifts merged with Waterside. These two clubs had contrasting origins: Swifts were founded in 1894 from a Sunday School, and Waterside were founded in 1921 by dock workers. The current Waterside Karori club is still nicknamed Wharfies. Waterside were originally based at Kaiwharawhara at Wellington's waterfront, a location still used by Waterside Karori. History Wellington Diamond United Wellington Diamond United was the result of the merger of Diamond and Zealandia/Wellington United in 1968. University-Mount Wellington is an association football club in Auckland, New Zealand. It was formed from the amalgamation of University AFC and Mount Wellington AFC.
