The 1978 New Hampshire gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 1978. Incumbent Republican Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr., who defeated former governor Wesley Powell for the Republican nomination, ran for a fourth term in office, but was defeated by State Representative Hugh Gallen. Hugh Gallen
Hugh J. Gallen (July 30, 1924 – December 29, 1982) was an American automobile dealer and Democratic politician from Littleton, New Hampshire. After serving in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, he served as the 74th governor of New Hampshire from 1979 until his death in 1982. Gallen was born in Portland, Oregon. Gallen served as governor from 1979 until his death. Although twice elected for two-year terms as governor he was defeated in his bid for a third term in 1982. In November 1982 he became seriously ill due to a blood infection that required dialysis. Gallen, who yielded his powers to State Senate President Vesta M. A Republican, he was known as a strong supporter of conservative political values. Early life Thomson was born in 1912 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Meldrim and Marion (Booth) Thomson, and was raised in Georgia and Florida. He was an Eagle Scout. Thomson attended Mercer University, Washington and Jefferson College, and the University of Georgia School of Law and was admitted to the practice of law in Florida in 1936. In 1938, he married his secretary, Anne Gale Kelly, and together they had six children. Thomson made his fortune publishing law books. In 1952, he founded Equity Publishing Corp., which published the laws of New Hampshire, Vermont, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico in English and Spanish. Wesley Powell (October 13, 1915January 6, 1981) was an American lawyer and Republican politician from Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Powell was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He attended schools in Portsmouth before graduating from the University of New Hampshire. He received his law degree from the Southern Methodist College of Law in 1940. United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 7, 1978, in 36 states and two territories.
